Actress Jennifer Aniston is a household name for her long-running stint as Rachel in the incredibly popular television series, Friends. Reese Witherspoon is also an actress, best known for her work on Legally Blonde and Sweet Home Alabama. The staunch advocates for equality in the workplace and female-to-female empowerment have a lot in common — but are Aniston and Witherspoon friends in real life? Here’s what we know.

Reese Witherspoon fangirled and ended up on ‘Friends’

In a funny turn of events, Witherspoon gushed about her love of both the television show Friends as a whole, and Aniston in particular. The creators of Friends had already seen her amazing acting chops when she appeared on Election, and they already wanted to get her on the show no matter what it too. Obviously, it didn’t take much.

Witherspoon was cast in a two-episode story-arc that had her playing the role of Rachel’s spoiled, obnoxious, yet surprisingly sweet, little sister. Of course, despite being incredibly talented, Witherspoon had never acted in front of a live studio audience and reportedly got incredibly nervous, to the point where she was unable to speak. Aniston gave her some words of encouragement and the rest was history.

Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston are friendship goals

Not only do Witherspoon and Aniston do normal friend things together, like getting manicures or supporting each other in hard times, but they only have the nicest things to say about each other. They epitomize true friendship goals.

In 2011 Witherspoon had nothing but kind words about Aniston: “There are not that many people… who have this incredible combination of sex appeal and complete lovability. You just want to get your nails done with her and you want to make out with her—at least I do.”

The adoration is obviously mutual. During a 2015 interview with Ryan Seacrest at the Oscars, Aniston stopped to say hi to her friend. As Witherspoon passed by, she jokingly gave Aniston a pinch on the rear, which was returned with a blown kiss. As Aniston stared after her gal pal, she said, “Look at her, she’s so cute. Oh, so pretty.”

There were rumors they didn’t get along

Despite having an incredibly close, uplifting friendship, there were rumors going around that the two did not get along. These rumors began because Witherspoon did not reappear on Friends later, but instead Christina Applegate made a guest appearance as Rachel’s older sister.

These rumors, of course, proved false. While Witherspoon never stated specifically why she didn’t return to Friends, this did occur around the time the actress rose to fame with Legally Blonde. Undoubtedly, Witherspoon was simply too busy to squeeze another project into her schedule.

They have a joint project coming out

At long last, the two friends have a joint project coming out and fans everywhere are super excited about it. The Morning Show will launch on Apple+ TV in the near future. Besides co-starring in the show together, Witherspoon and Aniston will also be executive producers.

When asked what The Morning Show was all about, Witherspoon stated that the two will “pull back the curtain on the power dynamics between men and women in the high-stakes world of morning news shows.” Aniston added that they will “take an honest look at the complex relationships between men and women in the workplace, and… engage in a conversation people are a little too afraid to have…”
