Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus are among two of the biggest pop stars in the world. The two singers have a lot in common: They both got their start in Tennessee, have country music roots, and rose to fame in the late 2000s. The two have even worked together in a professional setting. While they seemed to have a friendship that blossomed at the start of their career, the pair might have grown apart. Are Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift still friends?

How Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift’s friendship used to be

Back in 2009, when Hannah Montana had been on the air for a couple of years and Swift had just released her album Fearless, the two country singers collaborated on a Grammy Awards performance. The two girls sang “Fifteen” from Swift’s Fearless album. In an interview for CBS ahead of the performance, they talked about being friends and from the same town, and how they wanted to sing together on stage.

“Our personalities are opposites, so it works,” Swift said in the interview.

A few months after the Grammy Awards, Hannah Montana: The Movie came out, with a cameo from Swift. She sings “Crazier,” a song she wrote.

Flash forward to 2014, following Cyrus’ controversial MTV Video Music Awards performance with Robin Thicke. Swift vocalized that she was still a fan of Cyrus’.

“Honestly, I think that I cheer on anybody who is living their life on their own terms and wearing what they want to wear and representing what they want to represent,” Swift told Tout Le Monde En Parle per Seventeen. “I think that no other female artist should be able to tell me to wear less clothes and I’m not gonna tell any other female artist to wear more clothes,”

What went wrong between them over the years

The two seemingly drifted by the time that 2015 rolled around one year later. By then, Swift was on the top of her game. She had released 1989 the year prior and was parading her female friends around in Instagram pictures, music videos, and on tour. Cyrus spoke about Swift’s “squad” in an interview with The New York Times.

“I’m not trying to be in the squad,” Cyrus said. “None of my friends are famous and not because of any other reason than I just like real people who are living real lives, because I’m inspired by them.”

She also spoke to Marie Claire about what she thinks is a double standard in the music industry for her and Swift.

“I don’t get the violence revenge thing,” Cyrus said about Swift’s “Bad Blood” music video. “That’s supposed to be a good example? And I’m a bad role model because I’m running around with my t*tties out?”

A few years later, in 2018, Cyrus “liked” a post on Instagram that made fun of Swift’s career, comparing her to Britney Spears per Stylecaster.

Then in March 2019, Cyrus shared a NSFW photoshopped GIF of Swift and Cyrus dancing together on Twitter.

“It’s Women’s Day,” Cyrus said in her tweet. “To celebrate, will you top like Taylor? Or twerk like Miley? Please answer.”

With all of that in their past, neither Cyrus nor Swift have come out against one another in the last couple of years. And it seems that with Cyrus’ latest joking tweet, the two might not be friends, but aren’t on bad terms either.

Both singers have continued to release music that only gets better, and maybe one day they’ll be closer friends once again.
