Attack on Titan is nearing its conclusion, and the anime promises an epic and emotional ending to the series. Those who have read Hajime Isayama’s manga already have an idea of what’s coming. However, some of Attack on Titan‘s cast members are still in the dark, including Eren and Mikasa’s English voice actors, Bryce Papenbrook and Trina Nishimura.

Attack on Titan‘s anime adaptation may still be underway, but Hajime Isayama’s manga series took its final bow in April 2021. The final chapter was met with strong reactions from fans, many of whom weren’t pleased with the direction the story went in.

Since then, Attack on Titan has become known for its controversial ending. However, it’s unclear if the anime plans to follow in the manga’s footsteps completely. Although the adaptation remains fairly loyal to the source material, there’s always a chance it could switch things up in the final chapters.

However the anime ends, one thing is certain: two of Attack on Titan‘s dub cast members will be in for a surprise. Bryce Papenbrook and Trina Nishimura revealed they haven’t been spoiled yet. That means they’ll see how the story ends as they’re recording the final season.

During a panel for IGN Fan Fest, the main cast members from Attack on Titan‘s English dub sat down to discuss the series’ ending. Bryce Papenbrook (Eren), Trina Nishimura (Mikasa), and Josh Grelle (Armin) shared their thoughts on the final episodes. Papenbrook and Nishimura also revealed they don’t know where things are headed.

“I don’t know where he’s going with this,” Papenbrook said of Eren’s season 4 plans. “I haven’t been spoiled, I haven’t read the manga.”

He added that he likes to “live in that moment in real-time” when acting, allowing himself to react as his character is moving through the story. Given Eren’s unpredictable behavior in Attack on Titan Season 4, that must prove quite a roller coaster.

Nishimura also doesn’t know how the anime ends, but she knows what she’d like to see. Mikasa’s voice actor has a happy ending in mind — one we probably won’t get, but it’s nice to dream:

“In my heart of hearts, I really want Eren, Mikasa, and Armin to get matching townhomes somewhere and just be friends and just hang out. I know that’s not gonna happen, but I hope for them that it’ll be a happy ending. It won’t probably.”

As for Josh Grelle, Armin’s voice actor knows whether or not the trio will live in townhomes by the end. Grelle was spoiled by a fan, so they decided to just dig into the manga.

Eren and Mikasa’s voice actors may not know Attack on Titan‘s ending. However, Josh Grelle had the conclusion spoiled for them at a fan convention.

In an interview with Insider, Grelle recalled learning a major plot point from a fan, something that pushed them to just read the conclusion in its entirety:

“I was at a convention and someone just got really excited and blurted something out before I realized what was happening and it was like, ‘ah, okay cool.’ They spoiled a big enough thing that I was like, alright, screw it, I should just go ahead and see the rest of it.”

Of course, an anime-original ending could take Grelle by surprise as well. Only time will tell which path the series decides to take. But it seems Attack on Titan Season 4 will have both the cast and the fans waiting with bated breath.

New episodes of Attack on Titan drop every Sunday on Crunchyroll, Funimation, and Hulu.
