Attack on Titan Season 4 Part 2 recently saw the anime’s main characters forming a reluctant alliance in order to stop Eren and the Rumbling. However, their history may make it difficult for them to work together. Attack on Titan Episode 84 underscores that point, asking if the Scouts and the Warriors from Marley can really put aside their differences in order to save the world.

Attack on Titan Season 4 Part 2 has thrown plenty of twists viewers’ way, but perhaps none so surprising as the Scouts deciding to work with Annie and Reiner in order to stop Eren.

No matter which side of the conflict between Paradis Island and Marley they’re on, most of the anime’s major players disagree with Eren’s mass genocide. But will that be enough to form a united front against him?

It’s no secret the remaining characters have a complicated history with one another, and Attack on Titan Episode 84 reminds them of it. Although they reluctantly accepted an alliance last week, Yelena forces them to question it during the latest installment.

‘Attack on Titan’ Episode 84 stirs up old emotions

Attack on Titan Episode 84 opens with the alliance eating stew around a campfire, but things are hardly peaceful as the characters come to terms with their reunion.

The group is already on edge after everything they’ve been through together, and Yelena makes the situation worse. She reminds them of all the harm they’ve caused one another — bringing up everything from Reiner and Annie’s betrayals to the Scouts’ attack on Liberio during Attack on Titan Season 4 Part 1.

Their dinner ends with Jean attacking Reiner, right after learning the truth about what happened to Marco in season 1. It’s a devastating moment that underscores just how deep the cracks in their relationships go. So, can they truly overcome all their differences to defeat Eren?

Although fighting by the campfire suggests the Attack on Titan characters will have trouble working together, the end of episode 84 offers hope. Gabi is the first one to throw away her pride and beg the alliance to move forward with their plans. And they do despite dredging up their grudges the night before.

Of course, there is one question that remains — one that Annie doesn’t get a straight answer to. If the only way to stop Eren is by killing him, will that break the alliance?

Annie and the soldiers from Marley seem prepared for that possibility. However, Eren’s friends aren’t ready to face it. Mikasa balks at the suggestion, leading Annie to assume the Scouts will turn on them if that becomes their only option. It’s a fair point, and it may come up again later on. However, the group will try reasoning with Eren first — assuming they can get past his followers and reach him before he does the unthinkable.

New episodes of Attack on Titan drop on Sundays on Crunchyroll and Hulu.
