The battle currently unfolding in Attack on Titan Season 4 Part 2 is the result of a deep hatred between Paradis Island and Marley — one that Gabi Braun initially buys into. However, the anime’s latest episode sees Reiner’s younger cousin embracing a change of heart. Could she convince Attack on Titan‘s other characters to do the same?

[Warning: This article contains spoilers for Attack on Titan Episode 77.]

Season 4 opens with Gabi fully behind Marley

Attack on Titan Season 4 Part 1 opens with Gabi training to inherit the Armored Titan — and it’s clear from the get-go that she fully believes what Marley has told her about Paradis Island. Eren’s attack on Liberio only strengthens her conviction that the Eldians living inside the walls are all “devils.”

And although Falco spends most of season 4’s early episodes questioning Marley, Gabi continues to stew in her anger. It’s only after spending time around Eldians that she realizes how similar they are to her. And by the time Attack on Titan Season 4 Part 2 comes around, she’s had a serious change of heart.

Attack on Titan Episode 77, “Sneak Attack,” mostly focuses on the battle unfolding between Eren and Marley. However, it does briefly catch viewers up with Gabi and Falco. And Gabi demonstrates how much she’s grown during her short time on-screen.

As Gabi and Colt attempt to reunite with Falco, she prevents Colt from needlessly attacking a member of the Military Police. And while the three of them hide from the soldiers and civilians in the area, she admits that she’s changed her mind about Eldians. “There aren’t any devils on this island,” she tells them. “There’s just people.”

Gabi puts into words the point Attack on Titan strives to make throughout season 4, revealing she finally understands Reiner. And if everyone adopted her perspective, it could help bring the war to an end.

Will the other ‘Attack on Titan’ characters reach the same conclusion?

Attack on Titan Season 4 will finish the battle between Marley and Paradis Island one way or another — but will the two sides come to realize what Gabi has?

Marley doesn’t seem willing to budge, especially now that they’ve realized Eren and Zeke’s plan. And although some members of the Scouts Regiment could hear their enemies out, the Jaegerists are far too committed to their cause.

Unfortunately, Eren has demonstrated that he knows ordinary people exist on both sides. And that doesn’t slow him down from enacting his plans. If Eren pushes forward with the Rumbling, negotiations between the two groups will no doubt be difficult to achieve. Of course, it’s always possible they’ll band together to stop Eren and Zeke.

Only time will tell how things play out in Attack on Titan Season 4, but Gabi’s come a long way since it opened. Even if the anime isn’t building to a major revelation on both sides, it’s nice to see the individual characters pushing back against what they’ve been brought up to believe.
