Attack on Titan Season 4 Part 2 has sent the anime’s characters down some unexpected paths. And with the remaining members of the Scouts pushing back against Eren’s plans, Attack on Titan‘s final season could present Mikasa Ackerman with an impossible choice. Mikasa Ackerman faces an impossible question in episode 84

Attack on Titan Episode 84 builds on the tensions between the anime’s major characters, most of whom entered into a reluctant alliance the week before.

Although the Scouts agreed to work with the Warriors to stop the Rumbling, the group has a few issues to hash out. And Annie raises a question that could destroy their truce: are Eren’s friends willing to kill him if that’s what it takes to save the world?

Specifically, she aims this question at Mikasa Ackerman, who has spent the last three seasons doing everything in her power to protect Eren. Mikasa balks at the suggestion, and Annie agrees to drop the subject until they’ve tried to reason with Attack on Titan‘s lead.

However, Eren’s recent actions suggest he’s beyond reason. With that in mind, Annie may have a point. If push comes to shove, Mikasa and the other members of the 104th Cadet Corps may face an impossible decision. Would the series actually go there?

Will ‘Attack on Titan’ Season 4 present Mikasa with that choice?

Although the alliance agrees to put Annie’s question to the side for the time being, it may foreshadow a future problem. So, will Mikasa Ackerman be forced to choose between Eren and the rest of humanity?

Attack on Titan Season 4 spends a lot of time highlighting the growing distance between Eren and Mikasa. Viewers don’t get much insight into what’s happening inside Eren’s head. However, they see Mikasa considering his recent actions. Between removing her scarf and telling Hange she won’t let Eren kill anyone else, it’s clear she’s questioning her allegiance to him. But her response to Annie suggests she’s not ready to let go completely.

Fortunately, she may not have to. The group will try talking Eren out of his plan before taking further action. Perhaps they can reach a peaceful resolution — though it’s Attack on Titan, so we’re not holding our breath.

With the group embracing peace as their first option, Attack on Titan leaves the ball in Eren’s court heading into the final episodes — though that doesn’t let Mikasa off the hook just yet.

Eren could decide to move forward with the Rumbling regardless of what his friends say. If that’s the case, Mikasa may have to decide whether she’ll protect him or stand by while the others try to take him down. Depending on the severity of the situation, she may even need to help — a devastating thought after everything she and Eren have been through.

Hopefully, their relationship won’t come to that. As strained as it’s been, it’s hard to imagine Eren taking things that far when it comes to his friends. Only time will tell if they can persuade him to call off the Wall Titans. It would certainly come as a relief if they succeed.

New episodes of Attack on Titan Season 4 Part 2 drop on Sundays on Crunchyroll and Hulu.
