Tom Holland is reportedly set to reprise his role as Spider-Man in Avengers 5. The actor is currently slated for a third stand-alone film, Spider-Man 3, that is set to hit theaters in July of next year. Marvel seemingly has big plans for Peter Parker moving forward, but Sebastian Stan — a.k.a. The Winter Soldier — just teased that fans will have to wait a long time before Marvel’s next big crossover.

Inside Marvel’s plans for ‘Avengers 5’

After Avengers: Endgame became the highest-grossing film of all-time, fans fully expected Marvel to move forward with Avengers 5. Marvel president Kevin Feige has already confirmed as much, though the studio has yet to reveal a timeline for the project.

Marvel has already revealed its full slate of movies for the next two years. While Avengers 5 is not among those titles, inside sources claim that the studio wants Captain Marvel 2 to set up the events in Avengers 5, in a similar way that Captain America: Civil War set the stage for Avengers: Infinity War.

According to We Got This Covered, Marvel will make Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) the new leader of the Avengers and her sequel will include a slew of superheroes, many of whom will be introduced in Phase 4.

If the report is true, then Avengers 5 will not premiere until after Captain Marvel 2 hits theaters in the summer of 2022. This puts the project squarely in Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and opens the door for a bunch of potential cameos.

Sebastian Stan says Marvel has to figure some things out

Marvel has been very mum on releasing details about Avengers 5, so we cannot confirm any of the rumors related to the Captain Marvel sequel. Stan, however, was recently asked about starring in the next Avengers movie and revealed it might be a while before that happens.

“You know I know nothing about that. You know, I’m just… I’m just a man,” Stan shared. “We’ve got to figure out a couple of other missions first before we even get there.”

According to Yahoo, Stan opened up about Avengers 5 while promoting his new drama, Endings, Beginnings. He also poked fun at his The Falcon and the Winter Soldier co-star Anthony Mackie, saying that he has to “deal with this other person” before he takes on another Avengers project.

The series was scheduled to premiere on Disney+ this summer. Filming for the project was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, and it is still unclear when the show will premiere.

Will Tom Holland return as Spider-Man?

When it comes to which characters will appear in Avengers 5, a number of different names have popped up. The new team will undoubtedly feature some new faces, but inside sources also claim that Holland will be one of the leaders this time around.

A few members of the Avengers squad concluded their stories in Endgame, including Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson). Fans were sad to see these characters go, but their exits open the door for other heroes to step into the limelight.

Now that Marvel and Sony have inked a new deal, a source says that Holland’s Spider-Man will become one of Marvel’s lead characters. The source did not reveal any details about Spider-Man’s involvement in Avengers 5, but it sounds like he will play an important role in the action.

That said, production on the crossover will not get underway for a few years and a lot can change in the interim.

Will this be the main villain in ‘Avengers 5’?

Marvel’s next big villain has also been the subject of plenty of speculation. After destroying Thanos (Josh Brolin) and defeating his army, the Avengers will need a foe as equally challenging in the next film.

With that in mind, an insider told We Got This Covered that Marvel will introduce MODOK in Avengers 5. The source claimed that the villain, who will likely get a makeover for the MCU, may be introduced in a Phase 4 project before making bigger waves in Avengers 5.

The insider also said that MODOK will not be the only villain in the flick. Marvel is also thinking about teaming him up with Kang the Conqueror, though nothing has been set in stone just yet.

Marvel has not announced a production start date for Avengers 5.
