Recap of ‘Bel-Air’ Season 1 Episodes 1-3

The drama introduces viewers to a reimagined Will Smith, a straight-A student and high school basketball star already figuring out his plans to play in college. However, things are quickly derailed when notorious drug dealer Rashad Denton threatens Will after the teenager points a gun at him.

Knowing the dangers, his mom immediately sent him away from West Philadelphia to live with his uncles and cousins in Bel-Air. Similar to the ‘90s sitcom, Will clashes with their differing lifestyles.

He and Carlton, who has ditched the goofiness and signature dance for a more serious character with seemingly a drug dependency, quickly came to blows after he confronted the lacrosse player for allowing his teammates to use the “n-word” and took an interest in his ex-girlfriend, Lisa.

By episode 3, Will has started settling in more, annoying Carlton. For example, they joined Uncle Phil at his fraternity event, where the basketball star impressed the Alphas. Additionally, Will scored the game-winning shot in his first game, which Hilary, Aunt Viv, and Uncle Phil attended over Carlton’s lacrosse match, increasing his jealousy.

‘Bel-Air’ cast includes Jabari Banks as Will and Coco Jones as Hilary

Newcomer Jabari Banks was cast to play Will Smith, marking his first TV role. The redefined Banks include Vivian (Cassandra Freeman), lawyer Uncle Phil who is running for district attorney (Adrian Holmes), a more focused Hilary (Coco Jones) with chef aspirations, the “Jackie Robinson of lacrosse” Carlton (Olly Sholotan), and their youngest, Ashley (Akira Akbar).

The staple house manager, Geoffrey Thompson (Jimmy Akingbola), seems to have more of a counsel relationship with Philip than in the sitcom.

Additionally, Karrueche Tran portrays social media influencer Ivy, Duane Martin as Uncle Phil’s campaign manager Steven Lewis, Scottie Thompson as interior designer Angela, and Joe Holt as police chief Fred Wilkes, who is Lisa’s father and married to Angela. Bel-Air is streaming on Peacock.
