On Aug. 30, MTV hosted their annual Video Music Awards show in New York City featuring cultural icons such as Bella Hadid, Lady Gaga, and more, although they show had some considerable adjustments. Instead of its usual indoor format, the VMAs were hosted outdoors at various locations throughout NYC to enforce social distancing. MTV also opted not to have a live audience, and instead simulcasted the awards show on The CW broadcast network.

Despite the unusual conditions of the VMAs, the show was still a star-studded event that featured some of the biggest names in entertainment. However, two, in particular, drew a lot of attention. Notoriously on-again-off-again couple Bella Hadid and The Weeknd were both working at the show and reportedly crossed paths during rehearsals, and Hadid had the perfect look for the occasion.

Bella Hadid and The Weeknd have a long history with each other

Hadid and The Weeknd have been in each other’s lives for years, starting with an encounter at Coachella in 2015, according to Cosmopolitan. They initially became more than friends at the massive festival, at which he was performing. Speculation ensued about their relationship for months afterward, with The Weeknd driving fans crazy after posting a cryptic tweet.

Throughout 2015, the two were seen on dates in NYC and Los Angeles, and he finally spoke on their relationship in an interview with Rolling Stone, revealing that he’d initially reached out to her for work. A year later, it was reported that the two had broken up due to their conflicting schedules, and in 2017 The Wekend began a temporary relationship with Selena Gomez. The two broke up a few months later.

In 2018, Hadid and The Weeknd were seen together several times in Europe, and later post numerous images containing each other on Instagram, confirming they are back involved. However, by summer of 2019, the two had once again split, again, due to their busy work schedules. Despite the ups and downs of their relationship and its mercurial nature, the pair continued to remain friends and stayed in contact with each other.

Will Bella Hadid and the Weeknd Get Back Together? Sources Say the Exes Remain on ‘Good Terms’

Hadid and The Weeknd were both actively involved with the VMAs on Aug. 30, as the The Weeknd was the first performer for the main show, and Hadid was a presenter of an award. The Weeknd performed “Blinding Lights,” a hit single from his most recent album, After Hours. Later, Hadid presented the inaugural “Tricon Award” to Lady Gaga.

However, it was reported that Hadid and The Weeknd had crossed paths during the show’s rehearsal. Hadid was wearing an entirely see-through sheer top, leaving little to the imagination. This was apparently not long before his powerful performance that kicked off the show, so it’s safe to assume that it made an impression on him. According to Daily Mail, a source revealed “They played it cool and crossed paths with each other, same place, same time,’ and that the two are on good terms.

Due to the history of their relationship, there’s no telling if the two will get back together. But regardless of if they do, it’s good to know that they’re still friends and can keep things cordial when they see each other.
