Yawn has managed to sustain her youthful appearance with a little help from her favorite esthetician, girlfriend Leah Shafer. Not only is Shafer a recording artist, but she’s also a medical esthetician. She owns Colorado-based medical skincare studio Skin By Leah and dished with Showbiz Cheat Sheet about how she keeps Yawn’s skin looking so luminous.

This is what Captain Sandy does to maintain her youthful glow

While Shafer joked that Yawn’s glow comes from her smile and being in love, she says there is one other thing that really helps. “It’s all about hydration from the inside out and proper exfoliation for constant cell turnover,” she emphasized. The big question is how much water should you drink? “I always say it’s by body weight,” Shafer says. “But 64 ounces [per day] is ideal.”

Why is stepping up your skincare routine so important? “As we age we stop cell turnover and we need to trick the skin to reproduce new cells for the youthful appearance,” Shafer adds. “From microneedling to Laser Genesis, we need to do a controlled wound to the skin to force collagen production which plumps and tightens the skin.”

She adds that Yawn is a huge fan of the HydraFacial with the custom boosters. “And of course beginning each service with a dermaplane which removes facial hair and dead skin,” Shafer says. “She has the growth factor booster and uses an amazing hyaluronic to keep water in the skin.”

Why is the right skincare routine tough to find?

Shafer understands the challenges most women (and men) face as they age. “Most clients are guessing what they should use,” she says. “That’s why seeing a true professional skin care expert is crucial. I recommend products that exfoliate, brighten, tighten, and hydrate.”

She believes skin care is also individual and a good esthetician can recommend a customized regimen. Plus, she asserts that having the goal to achieve a healthy glow is great, but making a direct comparison to others can lead to frustration. “We are all unique and different,” Shafer says. “Our body chemistry is all different, so what may work for one person may not work for another. Wash face nightly and daily with proper serums and moisturizer.”

Shafer adds that professional skincare can be costly, but invaluable. “Be prepared to spend some money but it’s your face forever,” she advises. “You can cut corners financially with cleansers and moisturizers but everyone should have a good serum. Seeing a true pro expert is a must and getting monthly treatments is extremely important.”

Love Captain Sandy’s skin? Here’s exactly what she uses

Shafer dished about what exactly she uses on Yawn’s skin. “I gave Sandy the active serum for night time which I swear by. It brightens overall appearance, giving that youthful glow,” Shafer shares. “It shrinks pores and exfoliates.”

Yawn also uses the CE Ferulic serem daily. “This is a patented daytime vitamin C serum that delivers advanced environmental protection,” Shafer adds. “Plus it improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, loss of firmness, and brightens skin’s complexion. I also love the Image Hydraboost. This gives your skin a drink of water and a drink of vitamin C.”

Shafer adds that good skincare is something you have to work at, but is well worth it in the long run. “It gives me such joy when I transform skin and just make a difference in their daily lives with skin,” she says. “Using good at home care is crucial. It’s not different than working out and then eating a cheeseburger. Work out and then use good stuff on your face.”
