Below Deck Mediterranean’s Colin Macy-O’Toole Dishes About Why Casting ‘Below Deck Sailing Yacht’ Was Tough
Colin Macy-O’Toole from Below Deck Mediterranean pivoted from driving boats to being a casting driver and dished about what it was like to cast Below Deck Sailing Yacht. He recently helped cast Below Deck Down Under and started to cast Below Deck Sailing Yacht, but shared one small hurdle he encountered when it came to the sailing series.

“Part of the casting thing like before actually one of the hardest things about sailing is, I didn’t realize this, it’s very couply,” Macy-O’Toole said on the Dear Diary You’re Effed podcast. “So trying to find, obviously the show wants single people, but finding a lot of single sailors, they’re like, ‘Oh me and my boyfriend’ or ‘Me and my husband, we’ve been traveling on the sailboat.'”
“I didn’t realize that was a thing,” he continued. Podcast host Hannah Ferrier pointed out how Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 1 had a longtime couple. “Yeah, Paget [Berry] and Ciara [Duggan] were on it the first season,” she recalled. “And that’s very typical in yachting.” Berry and Duggan got engaged but recently broke up.
Macy-O’Toole also chatted with Showbiz Cheat Sheet about how he got into casting. “I did the casting for some of the other Below Decks,” he said. “They asked me to help out, so yeah, I’ve been a casting producer for Below Deck Down Under and I started [Below Deck] Sailing [Yacht] for next season.”
Would Colin Macy-O’Toole consider working on a sailing yacht?
Macy-O’Toole said while he likes Captain Glenn Shephard from Below Deck Sailing Yacht, he wouldn’t be too keen to work on a sailing yacht. He said he’d consider doing a season with Captain Lee Rosbach from Below Deck, but Macy-O’Toole knows his way around motor yachts.
“Glenn I would,” he added. “Just the whole sailing part scares me. I would break the boat. Because I don’t know what I’m doing. Glenn himself I would love to work with. But yeah, just the sailing part of it … yeah.” He added, “And those guys are crazy. Like sailing people, I had to interview some of them for the next cast sailing season. Those guys are like animals! They go hard.”

Macy-O’Toole also got a shout-out on the Below Deck Sailing Yacht Instagram Pita Party. Dani Soares, Alli Dore, and Daisy Kelliher mused about which Below Deck crew member is they think is the hottest. Soares likes Kelley Johnson from Below Deck. And Kelliher said Jack Stirrup from Below Deck Mediterranean is the hottest.
But Dore said Macy-O’Toole was her ultimate Below Deck crush. “I think Colin from Below Deck Med, Colin Macy-O’Toole is the hottest,” she said. “I just love how innocent he is! It’s like the cuteness!” Adding, “I think out of all the seasons, he’s the most attractive.” All three women agreed that Macy-O’Toole was very likable too.
