Better Call Saul fans can’t wait to see the series return for the final season in 2022. It’s been a long wait for filming to begin due to coronavirus (COVID-19) related delays, but showrunner Peter Gould recently shared a photo proving the hard work of creating season 6 has officially begun.

Fans cannot wait to catch up with Jimmy McGill, Kim Wexler, and the rest of the cast after the explosive season 5 finale on April 20, 2020. But they may not recognize lead actor Bob Odenkirk when he reprises his role as everyone’s favorite criminal lawyer from Breaking Bad.

No one expected Better Call Saul to become more popular than the beloved AMC drama Breaking Bad. But there’s something about the intense character development that makes some fans enjoy the spinoff prequel even more than the original. It got off to a slow start, but now the action is heating up as the series winds to a close.

Better Call Saul follows Jimmy McGill in the years preceding Breaking Bad and explains how he becomes Saul Goodman, the shady lawyer who helps Walter White and Jesse Pinkman get away with being drug-dealing criminals.

Bob Odenkirk worked on ‘Nobody’ during the ‘Better Call Saul’ hiatus

It’s been close to a year since the season 5 finale of Better Call Saul aired and longer than that since Odenkirk got done filming his part. In the meantime, he took on another exciting acting project. The movie Nobody has some serious John Wick vibes and is already making waves with action movie lovers.

But Odenkirk’s portrayal of a family man named Hutch who goes on a revenge mission required a very different set of skills compared to playing Saul Goodman. The actor spent a lot of time preparing for Nobody, and there’s no doubt Better Call Saul fans will notice a change.

Fans are likely to notice slight physical changes in all the characters since so much time has passed since Better Call Saul Season 5. That’s an issue that comes up a lot in the prequel, which is technically set before Breaking Bad but filmed after. Certain characters look drastically older when they should be younger.

And now thanks to starring in Nobody, Odenkirk is going to have a whole new look, too. The SNL alum discussed how important it was that he undergo proper training before filming fight scenes in the action movie. Thanks to his training, Jimmy McGill will look a lot more physically fit in season 6 than he did in prior seasons.

“I started as a comedy writer in this business,” Odenkirk said in a video promo posted to the movie’s official Twitter account, “so, no exercise at all.” That all changed in the past year.

“I knew that I had to go to a whole other level if I wanted to actually do the fighting and not get hurt.”

Producer David Leitch, who also worked on John Wick, confirms that the Better Call Saul lead leaned into the intensive training routine and took it seriously. Consequently, fans of the Breaking Bad prequel are about to see a whole new side of Jimmy McGill.

Better Call Saul Season 6 is tentatively slated to premiere in early 2022.
