There are two sides to most of the characters on Better Call Saul. Jimmy McGill is Saul Goodman. Kim Wexler is a relentlessly ethical lawyer who also kind of enjoys pulling scams. Mike is a doting grandfather and ruthless assassin. And then there’s that creepy, overly friendly cab driver Jeff who’s clearly hiding some kind of ulterior motives.

Fans are dying to know who this mysterious “Jeff” is and whether he’s just a superfan like he says, or if he’s really an undercover cop getting ready to make Saul Goodman pay for his many crimes.

Saul Goodman won’t last much longer as Gene Takovic

Most of the show Better Call Saul serves as a prequel to Breaking Bad. But the extended black and white scenes of Saul masquerading as Gene Takovic document the aftermath of the Breaking Bad drama. After calling Ed the vacuum repairman and fleeing Albuquerque, Saul becomes a Cinnabon manager in Omaha, Nebraska.

Gene’s predictable, routine existence at the mall couldn’t be more different than Saul Goodman’s fast-paced lawyer lifestyle. It’s obvious that Saul hates his life as Gene but feels trapped there because of how many people are probably after him, from cartel associates to law enforcement.

As fans watched Gene sink further and further into despair, it became clear that Saul would resurface eventually. But no one predicted he’d get made by a cab driver.

The cab driver ‘Jeff’ is following Saul for some reason

Fans were cringing when “Jeff” went up to Gene on his lunch break and started loudly insisting that he knew him from Albuquerque and is a huge fan. Saul tries to deny who he really is, but eventually gives in and repeats the slogan he was known for.

“I know who you are,” Jeff says despite Saul’s protests. “You know who you are. Just get past that. I just want you to admit it. Just say it.”

Saul looks around before whispering, “Better call Saul.”

Though it’s unclear if he realizes it, Saul also ran into Jeff in Season 4 while leaving the hospital. Saul never gets a good look at his cab driver’s face. But it’s the same actor in that scene as the one confronting him at the mall. Clearly, Jeff is following Saul and knows more than he’s letting on. But why?

Fans predict Jeff is an undercover cop hunting for Saul

There’s almost no chance that Jeff is just some random fan of Saul Goodman and this is all a coincidence. Fans are predicting that Saul’s hospital visit triggered some kind of alert and now Jeff is intentionally following Saul to prove his true identity. After that mall scene, Jeff should have enough evidence to arrest Saul, if he is really operating undercover.

After the encounter with Jeff, Saul calls Ed the vacuum repairman to arrange yet another new identity. But at the last minute, he goes back on the plan, saying cryptically that he’s going to handle the situation himself.

It’s unclear what’s going to happen between Saul and Jeff or if Jeff truly is working undercover. But one thing is for sure — we haven’t seen the last of him.
