Being the pop diva she’s known as today, it’s easy to assume that Beyoncé gets whatever she wants in life. Though that is somewhat true, there have been times when things haven’t exactly gone Bey’s way, and her 2008 wedding to Jay-Z is an example of this.

Although she couldn’t have looked happier on her big day, Beyoncé apparently wasn’t head over heels in love with her wedding dress, which her mother, Tina Knowles-Lawson, designed.

Beyoncé married Jay-Z in 2008

On April 4, 2008, Beyoncé and Jay-Z tied the knot during a super-exclusive (and private) wedding ceremony held inside the rapper’s New York City penthouse.

Unlike many other celebrity weddings, Bey and Jay kept things pretty low-key for their big day by inviting only a few of their closest friends and family to watch them say “I Do” in the sprawling 13,500 square foot home.

Since the wedding was so hush-hush, not many details about that day are known, other than it was reportedly filled with “lots of love, some tears, 70,000 white orchids, and no phones.”

It’s also been revealed that Beyoncé’s mom, Tina Knowles-Lawson, designed the singer’s wedding dress, which she gave fans a glimpse of in her 2011 music video for “I Was Here.”

Though the video showed the singer beaming in her dress as she exchanged vows with Jay-Z, it turns out that she didn’t absolutely adore the simple, yet traditional tiered and ruffled strapless gown her mother created.

While it’s never been revealed why Bey didn’t like her wedding dress, it seems like the gown was just way too simple for her liking, which is pretty understandable considering she’s worn many designer dresses that have been showstoppers.

Beyoncé, apparently, wasn’t crazy about her wedding dress

We know what you might be thinking, “If Beyoncé didn’t like her wedding dress, why did she wear it?” The answer to this is simple: she didn’t want to hurt her mom’s feelings by admitting that the gown wasn’t her style.

In 2016, Knowles-Lawson revealed during an appearance on the Today show that though Beyoncé was unhappy with her wedding dress, she wore it to make the House of Deréon designer happy.

“She was so sweet to let me do that. She came back later one day and she said, ‘You know, when my daughter gets married, I’m going to let her pick out her own dress.’ Maybe she wasn’t so excited about it at the time, but she’s a sweetheart,” Knowles-Lawson said.

Though it might have been an off-the-cuff remark, it seems like Mama Knowles got the hint that the wedding dress she designed wasn’t exactly her daughter’s cup of tea.

Beyoncé dazzled in her vow renewal gown

Although Beyoncé’s first wedding dress wasn’t exactly her style, the same didn’t apply to her vow renewal gown.

In 2018, Beyoncé and Jay-Z renewed their vows in a beautiful, low-key ceremony, which the singer shared photos of in a video montage posted to her Instagram.

In a clip from their special day, the hitmaker is seen donning a Galia Lahav’s “Thelma” wedding gown, which she reportedly chose from its “Victoria Affinity” couture collection. The off-the-shoulder style gown — which featured “a corseted bodice, long fishtail train, Swarovski crystal embellishment, and Chantilly lace trimming”— was said to pay homage to Queen Victoria’s wedding dress, according to Vogue.

Bey paired the dress with a dramatically long veil and jeweled sunglasses, which gave it a bit more pizzazz.

The dress practically screamed Beyoncé, and from her 2018 video montage, it seemed that she had no regrets about her vow renewal gown whatsoever.
