Beyoncé and Jay-Z are music’s power couple

Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s relationship dates back to the early aughts. The couple first met in 2000 while attending the MTV Spring Break festival in Cancun. Beyoncé was 18 years old while Jay-Z was nearing 30.

Jay-Z later rapped about that fateful day on his 2018 song “713,” giving fans a little insight into his and Bey’s first meeting.

“We played it cool at the pool of the Cancun, VMA / Confidence you exude make the fools stay away / Me, I played my room, let the fools have they say / Fate had me sittin’ next to you on the plane / And I knew straight away,” he said.

After over a year of friendship — and talking on the phone constantly — Beyoncé and Jay-Z began dating, marking the start of their romance as well as a series of musical collaborations. With their jet-setting lifestyles, legions of fans, and multi-platinum record sales, the pair embraced their commonalities, resulting in them becoming music’s power couple.

Bey and Jay took the entertainment industry by storm for the next few years, releasing several hit songs together, all while growing their respective music careers and empires.

On April 4, 2008, the couple tied the knot in a top-secret wedding ceremony held inside Jay-Z’s New York City penthouse.

Beyoncé says her marriage to Jay-Z is a ‘coincidence’

In her 2013 HBO documentary Life is But a Dream, Beyoncé got candid about her marriage to Jay-Z while giving fans a never-before-seen look into their private life together.

While speaking on their chemistry and undeniable attraction, the “Formation” singer shared that it was fate that she married the rapper.

“I think me marrying a musician is a coincidence,” she said. “I mean, we connected because we both performed and we both had similar lifestyles. But we connected on a spiritual level and he just so happened to be a musician.”

Though she’s been fiercely secretive about their relationship over the years, Beyoncé spoke highly of her marriage to the rapper in the documentary, sharing that they bring out the best in each other.

“He’s taught me so much about being an artist,” the singer said. “Not a musician but an artist and fighting for what I believe and having my standards. He doesn’t compromise his art. I used to be afraid of people thinking I was too difficult or too critical but I don’t care about that anymore as long as it is the right reasons, and I learned that from him.”

Beyoncé on her strong relationship with Jay-Z

After the documentary’s release, Beyoncé further elaborated on her solid relationship with Jay-Z while speaking with Oprah Winfrey.

During their discussion, the multi-Grammy winner told Oprah that she and the rapper have a solid dynamic, which they established long before becoming romantically involved.

“We were friends first for a year and a half before we went on any dates,” Beyoncé explained. “We were on the phone for a year and a half, and that foundation is so important for a relationship. Just to have someone that you just like is so important, and someone [who] is honest.”

Since then, the couple’s relationship has only grown stronger. Though sharing similar lifestyles and having chemistry has helped make their marriage work, Beyoncé shared that having Jay-Z support her in every aspect of life is what has kept her smitten with him all these years.

“I would not be the woman I am if I did not go home to that man,” she said. “It just gives me such a foundation. [He’s helped me] on so many levels.”
