Beyoncé Might Perform ‘King Richard’ Song ‘Be Alive’ At the Oscars From a Special Location For Serena and Venus Williams

Beyoncé has been a longtime supporter of Serena and Venus Williams, and even recorded the song 'Be Alive' for the movie 'King Richard' about their father. Beyoncé is set to perform the song at the Oscars from a special location.

Beyoncé is no stranger to the world of film and film soundtracks. For the Will Smith-led movie King Richard, Bey recorded a special song titled “Be Alive,” and is meant to be as inspiring as the film itself.

King Richard tells the story of Richard Williams, the father of Serena and Venus Williams who helped them rocket to the top of the tennis world.

For his role in the movie, Will Smith earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. Aunjanue Ellis, who starred opposite Smith as Serena and Venus’ mother and coach, also racked up a nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Beyoncé might perform ‘Be Alive’ at the Oscars

According to Variety, organizers at the Academy Awards have been working to recruit Beyoncé for a one-of-a-kind performance of “Be Alive,” which is nominated for Best Original Song. Sources close to the matter detail that Beyoncé’s team has been in talks to host a remote performance of the song at tennis courts in Compton, California.

The location would be especially significant: both Venus and Serena Williams learned how to play tennis on the courts in Compton and were coached day in and day out by their father, Richard.

It’s unclear just how the performance will go and when in the ceremony it will happen. Some speculate that it may open the show and Will Smith will appear alongside Beyoncé, then they’d both head to the ceremony in time to hear their categories’ winners be announced.

Beyoncé’s relationship with Serena Williams goes back years

Beyoncé has been a fan of the Williams sisters for years, and has even worked with Serena herself in the past. The tennis champ appeared in the music video for Bey’s 2016 song “Sorry.”

“Dancing in the Beyoncé video was obviously a lot of fun. I remember being super sore after because I was down the whole time, you know, kind of twerking a lot,” Serena told the Associated Press of the video. “I was able to work a lot with her choreographers … and I really learned so much just about my body movement and also different styles of movement to do.”

That same year, Beyoncé and Jay-Z showed up to support Serena at Wimbledon during the women’s final match. They were also in attendance when Williams played at the U.S. Open a few months earlier.

For her part, Serena is incredibly grateful to have the support and friendship from two of music’s biggest stars. She told E! News in 2016 that having them behind her has been extremely helpful for her in her life. “It’s great to have Beyoncé and Jay Z supporting,” she said. “It’s always wonderful to see them at tennis and it’s always good when you can just rely on someone and know that they’re always in your corner whether they are there or not and that’s kind of how it is with us.”
