Beyoncé’s Self-Worth Has Allowed Her Marriage to Thrive

Beyoncé is the picture of a self-made woman. Getting married to Jay-Z certainly boosted her career, and his, but it was her own smart decisions and talent that made her independently wealthy. It is the foundation not only of a beautiful marriage but also for the empire she has built.

Queen Bey’s words resonate throughout the relationship

In 2018, Beyoncé’s marriage advice appeared in an article by Brides Magazine alongside several other celebrities that have lasted for many years under public scrutiny.

“‘I was independent before I met my husband, and we have such a natural chemistry and a genuine relationship, and it’s based on the things that relationships are supposed to be based on,” Beyoncé told GQ. “I’ve seen, growing up, when a woman or a man in a relationship—it doesn’t matter which one—doesn’t feel confident, they feel a bit trapped. Your self-worth is determined by you. You don’t have to depend on someone telling you who you are.”

This quote comes from something she said before Jay-Z’s cheating scandal was revealed and before her album Lemonade showed her working through it. Today, the words resonate and it is clear that the work Beyoncé and Jay-Z have put into their relationship stems from the ideas she has about independence and mutual respect in a marriage.

Jay- Z works it out alongside Beyoncé

Just because Jay-Z admitted to cheating in 2016 doesn’t mean he was off the hook. Beyoncé may have built a solid foundation for her own self-worth but he knew he still had to work for her forgiveness … and the first step was coming clean about the problem. Having worked on these issues herself in the past, she knew she could help him work through this, and they did it together.

Therapy and their music helped Beyoncé and Jay-Z work past the affair

The iconic Lemonade album released in 2016, and many fans saw it as a slap in the face to Jay- Z but he is quoted as saying: “… I have a beautiful wife who was understanding and who knew that I’m not the worst of what I’ve done and who did the hard work of going to therapy and really, we love each other.” Only a few days later, Beyoncé launched her world tour, Formation, and the last song of the night was a tribute to her family with a special shoutout to her husband.

Beyoncé is always growing and always adding to her self-worth

There’s more than one documentary about Beyoncé, even one that was co-directed by Queen Bey herself. HBO released Life is But a Dream in February 2013 on their network. According to GQ, the president of programming at the time, Michael Lombardo, couldn’t get over the film when he first saw it. He said of the film: “You feel the struggle of someone who has been handled for so long searching to find the part of her that she can disclose to the public. That vulnerability of someone searching for the comfort place where they’re willing to be more than the image that has been fed to us. I was incredibly moved by that. Yeah, it’s a brand play, it’s an image play. It might be the most astute sort of self-packaging that we’ve ever seen. But I dare anybody to tune in and turn it off.”

Unlike any other self-directed pieces that Lombardo had seen before Life is But a Dream, Beyoncé was able to look at herself and bare all. She wasn’t sensationalist. She wasn’t demure. She is a queen and the crown was made for her.
