Most of us know him as Bill Nye, the science whiz turned pop culture hit due to his award-winning TV show, Bill Nye the Science Guy. Though the show ended way back in 1998, every so often we see Nye pop up in different settings such as Dancing with the Stars, answering Twitter questions, or in a T-Mobile promo to explain 5G technology. Nye generally gets the thumbs-up from people, but who would have thought that he would become the internet’s latest sensation?

Why did Bill Nye start trending this weekend?

At first, Twitter users were alarmed when they checked their feeds and saw Nye’s name trending. “Is he ok?” was the first thought going through many people’s heads. But in a prime of example of when going viral goes right, Nye was filmed doing something that caught fans off guard.

A now-viral clip shows the science expert in a fashion show with other models, strutting down the runway. Except Nye has no ordinary fierce strut, he breaks into a dance to Lizzo’s “Juice.” Ow!

People can’t get enough of “the flyest guy on the catwalk” and his dance moves. Nye’s debonair outfit and those of his fellow models also begged the question, “Who’s the designer?”

What’s the story behind Nye’s fashion strut?

It only took moments for the video to pick up speed, and the story behind the Nye moment is the real story. While some fans believed that Nye was part of a fashion designer’s runway show, it turns out the event was for charity. Each year during New York Fashion Week, he supports the Prostate Cancer Foundation’s Blue Jacket Fashion Show where designers partner up with figures from media, fashion, sports, and entertainment to raise funds.

The 2020 show took place on Feb. 5 and Nye was just one of the models. He was also joined by celebs like NFL baller Jesse Palmer, Dr. Oz, DJ Envy, and Nigel Barker. During the 2017 fashion show, Nye shared that his father passed away from prostate cancer and as a scientist, believes the world is getting closer to a cure. It’s a cause close to his heart:

The ‘Blue Jacket Fashion Show’ attracts some famous names

Since its first outing in 2017, the event has lined up Nye and others to walk in reimagined versions of the traditional blue blazer. Blue is the symbolic color for prostate cancer awareness, and the Blue Jacket Fashion Show is billed as one event that highlights men’s health issues. Annually, it draws in celebrity supporters of all backgrounds.

According to a press release for the show, this year include Nye and more:

“The evening was hosted by fashion industry icon André Leon Talley, and models included musician David Byrne, TV personalities Dr. Mehmet Oz and Jesse Palmer, educator Bill Nye, actors Lee Tergenson, Dominic Fumusa and Jeremy Carver, news anchor Mike Woods, professional football player Buster Skrine, TV personalities Nigel Barker and Carson Kressley, radio hosts Elvis Duran and DJ Envy, model Alex Lundqvist, fashion icon Simon Doonan and men’s health expert Dr. Mike Varshavski.”

Although Nye hasn’t commented yet on the excitement surrounding his viral boogie, it wouldn’t be surprising if he uses it as an opportunity to advocate for men’s health. For now, fans can’t stop watching the clip.
