Househunting is never fun for anyone, and billionaires are no different. Even Beyonce and Jay-Z, one of the most successful couples in the world, would agree with you. As it turns out even having a combined net worth of over $1 billion can’t save you from the stresses of finding a home.

Back in 2017, the superstar couple were on a search for the Los Angeles mansion of their dreams but were having no luck finding the right one. During their search, they actually came across two homes that fit the description they were looking for, but as hard as it may be to believe, they were outbid by other wealthy entrepreneurs! Sounds hard to believe, right? Well believe it, the story is wild.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z were based in New York City for many years

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Jay-Z never strayed too far from home during the height of his music career. At his peak, Jay-Z was earning tens of millions from music and business deals and was well on his way to becoming the billionaire he is today. Thanks to his massive success, he was able to purchase a luxurious Tribeca apartment at 185 Hudson Street for $6.85 million back in 2004.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z began dating in the early 2000s, so it only makes sense that she began to spend more time in NYC, rather than her native Houston, Texas. As their relationship progressed, she moved in with Jay-Z and the couple began living together in Jay-Z’s penthouse. The penthouse is even rumored to have been the location of their top-secret wedding, according to Rolling Stone.

Don’t get it twisted, though. Beyoncé has shelled out some cash for her own property in NYC as well. According to the New York Post, he purchased her own Midtown apartment to house her family and guests, later selling it for almost $10 million in 2017. Beyonce’s mother also owned a property in the same building.

The billionaire couple were outbid for their favorite homes, twice

After several years together in NYC, the Carters decided to take their lifestyle to the west coast and began searching for a property in LA. Unfortunately, the search was not easy, as they engaged in a three-year-long house hunt during which they were either outbid or faced prices that were too high.

According to CNBC, the first home the couple had their eyes on was snatched up by Markus Persson, the creator of the wildly popular video game Minecraft. Beyoncé and Jay-Z had already made an offer for the home, but after selling his company to Microsoft for $2.5 billion, Persson scooped up the Beverly Hills property for $70 million.

Not to be discouraged, the couple continued their search, next landing on a $49 million estate in the same neighborhood. They offered $49 million for the home, but once again were outbid at the last second; world-famous fashion designer Tom Ford made an offer for $50 million and the property was his.
