On January 7, 2020, the official Black Lightning Twitter account confirmed that the show has been renewed for season 4. Posting a picture of Jefferson and his daughters in their superhero costumes with the word “renewed” across their legs. The account said, “The power of lightning. [Black Lightning] has been renewed for season 4.”

Luckily, for fans, this renewal comes before season 3 is even finished. Or, indeed, before its 2020 return. Some may wonder, however, why it’s renewed so early. According to Kayti Burt at Den of Geek, CW President Mark Pedowitz said: “Early orders for next season give our production teams a head start in plotting out story arcs and a jump on hiring staff, and this also provides [the CW network] with a strong foundation of established, fan-favorite CW shows to build on for next season.”

So Black Lightning is not the only show to benefit from this early renewal. Thirteen of the shows on the network have already been renewed. The CW has renewed shows early before. According to Nellie Andreeva of Deadline, it has been common for Pedowitz to renew shows around this time.

Yet the site suggests that there might be another reason why the renewal for the CW shows is so early. Andreeva mentions that TV studios are preparing for a writer’s strike before they renegotiate with the WGA. Renewing shows early will allow scripts to be finished earlier and limit any negative effects from writers not working.
