This spring, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to drop a solo Black Widow movie, starring Scarlett Johansson. And fans are pumped. As one of the original Avengers, Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, has had plenty of screen time with hand-to-hand combat, gunfights, and foot chases. However, fans have been clamoring for even more content surrounding the enigmatic character.

Fans are finally getting what they want. The highly anticipated Black Widow movie hits theaters in April. With that in mind, Johansson stopped by Entertainment Weekly for a cover shoot and a little conversation. The action star reflected on her past MCU films and dished about what makes her latest one “really rewarding.”

Scarlett Johansson: A decade of Black Widow

On the set of her Entertainment Weekly shoot for Black Widow, Johansson reflected on the last decade of playing the iconic Marvel Comics character. She originated the big-screen version of Natasha Romanoff in the 2010 film, Iron Man 2, opposite Robert Downey Jr.

In the movie, Natasha operates undercover to keep tabs on Tony Stark, the volatile playboy who dons the Iron Man suit. Tony is shocked when he learns that she has been secretly reporting to S.H.I.E.L.D. head honcho, Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson.

Some of Black Widow’s signature martial arts moves, created in Iron Man 2, appeared in subsequent MCU films and will be seen yet again in Black Widow.

“I’m still doing a lot of those moves today,” the actress dished.

Johansson is anticipating the reaction to ‘Black Widow’

From the start of the MCU film series, Johansson said she “just hoped that the audience would accept my portrayal of this beloved character.”

Johansson’s desire that she felt ten years ago to portray a Black Widow that fans could get behind has materialized into reality. The actress’s amazing performances coupled with her solid work ethic, along with some very well-written stories, solidified Johansson’s Black Widow as one of the great comic-inspired heroes on the big screen.

“Personally, I feel really proud of the work we’ve done,” the MCU star sincerely expressed.

But no matter how proud she is of the final product, Johansson also noted that she is “eagerly anticipating what the reaction is going to be.”

‘Black Widow’ is ‘really rewarding,’ Scarlett Johansson says

MCU fanatics embraced Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow long ago, and the excitement around the film is palpable. This means that fans have high expectations for this film.  Considering the on-camera and behind the scenes talent, Black Widow has the potential to meet and exceed all expectations.

Alongside Johansson, Black Widow also stars Florence Pugh, Rachel Weisz, and David Harbour. What’s more, the director of the thriller, Berlin Syndrome, Cate Shortland, is helming the film. And to top things off, Eric Pearson, one of the writers behind the exceptional MCU Thor: Ragnarok script, wrote the screenplay for Black Widow.

All of these elements add up to a winning combination, and Johansson seems confident that the team hit the target. Of Black Widow, she said:

“We really are able to dig deep emotionally and I feel that the character is represented as a fully recognized woman in this film, which has been really rewarding, creatively.”

Fans won’t have to wait much longer to see Black Widow. The film is scheduled to hit theaters April 24, 2020.
