How did BLACKPINK’s Rosé get into K-pop?

Rosé was born in New Zealand and raised in Australia. Although she grew up in an ethnically Korean family, she once shared that a career as a K-pop idol seemed distant for her growing up.

“In Australia, I didn’t think that there was much of a chance for me to become a singer – especially to become a K-pop star,” she said, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. “I was living so far from the country that it never really occurred to me as a possibility.”

Nevertheless, Rosé’s family knew she had an interest in music and encouraged her to try out for YG Entertainment when the company held auditions in Australia.

“[My dad] was sick of me screaming at the top of my lungs on my piano every night at 12 a.m.,” she joked on the Zach Sang Show. “So he wanted to get rid of me and send me to South Korea to fulfill my dreams.”

Rosé says she was ‘greedy’ as a trainee

Rosé moved to South Korea as a teenager after being accepted by YG Entertainment. There, she worked as a trainee for four years.

During a recent appearance on the Korean show My Little Old Boy, Rosé revealed that being a trainee was no doubt very tough. However, she acknowledged that it could also be due to her “greediness” at the time.

“I was really greedy,” she said. “Back then, I was extremely determined to do well. I wanted to become an excellent singer. So I struggled the most with the internal conflict I had.”

Rosé also had a lot of help from other BLACKPINK members

Rosé trained alongside other young hopefuls. While she had a tenacious spirit, she has given some of her peers credit for helping her become better.

For example, her fellow BLACKPINK members taught her how to dance, especially because dancing is extremely important in K-pop and Rosé was very inexperienced when she starting her trainee journey.

“I never danced before I became a trainee,” Rosé said on an episode of BLACKPINK’s 2020 show 24/365 With BLACKPINK. “Jennie taught me the basic moves when I first started as a trainee… I had a mental breakdown because we had to do that for months.

She continued, “But I started wanting to dance well after seeing Lisa dance. She was so good at dancing and I thought, ‘I want to be good just like her.’”

Because of her hard work, Rosé is now able to stand on stage with the rest of BLACKPINK and entertain countless fans all over the world.
