Fans have to wait to see what will happen in season 12 of Blue Bloods. Some are hoping Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) and Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez) will fall in love. But there is one big problem stopping that from happening.

Danny Reagan and Maria Baez grew closer in ‘Blue Bloods’ Season 11

Danny and Baez have been solving crimes together since season 3. Their relationship has mostly been all about business since Danny was married, but his wife Linda (Amy Carlson) died a few years ago.

Season 11 opened with Danny and Baez trying to find a serial killer. Baez hurt her leg, and Danny invited her over for family dinner for the first time. The case continued to push them closer because Baez tried to go rogue. Danny told her to go back to being her cool-headed self because he likes her the way she is.

A later episode showed Baez finding the body of a man she used to date in front of her house. Danny and Baez admitted it was awkward talking to each other about dating other people.

These things pretty much confirmed the detectives like each other. But they also agreed not to do anything about it.

Season 11 gave strong hints that the partners have feelings for each other but don’t want to do anything about it. Showrunner Kevin Wade explained why their relationship probably wouldn’t build any further for some time.

“We recognize it and certainly the actors like each other, in front of the camera and between setups,” he told TV Insider. “I’m gonna use Sam and Diane from Cheers and really age myself here, but once it happens, there’s nowhere to go.”

He then added, “There really aren’t stories in happy couples, and there are definitely not stories in police detectives on the job having a personal relationship with their partner.”

Wade also claimed he would have to find them, new partners. It would also be a struggle for them to find space to tell their story.

“But we have so little real estate as the show grows, as we bring in a guy like Will Hochman playing Joe Hill, as we play Whoopi [Goldberg] or Dylan Walsh as the mayor,” he said. “It’s 43 minutes and we have to keep an eye on what we have room for.”

This sadly means fans should probably set their expectations lower for a love story next season between Danny and Baez. Then again, Wade said similar things about Jamie (Will Estes) and Eddie (Vanessa Ray), and the former partners are now married.
