The biggest roles on Blue Bloods are in the Reagan family. But Marisa Ramirez, who plays Maria Baez, says there is a perk to not having one of those roles. She also talked about getting to finally film with some of the other stars.

‘Blue Bloods’ is focused on the Reagan family

The Reagan family is very close for multiple reasons and have a long history working in law enforcement. Henry (Len Cariou) used to be the NYPD police commissioner, and now his son, Fank (Tom Selleck) is in the position.

Frank’s kids also work in law enforcement. Jamie (Will Estes) is a police sergeant, Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) is a detective, and Erin (Bridget Moynahan) is an assistant for the district attorney. Sometimes their cases overlap so they work together.

The family is also close because they suffered the loss of Frank’s other son, Joe, recently before season 1 started. He was murdered and also worked as a cop.

Lastly, the family makes sure to keep in touch with each other weekly by having dinner together. Being a Reagan is obviously a big role in the show, but Ramirez revealed the one perk to playing someone outside of the family.

The biggest roles are the Reagans on the show. But there is an upside to the roles that help push along their stories.

Ramirez told PopCulture.com it helps her spend time with her own family. “I’ve created a life for myself here on the East coast, and I had a kid,” she said. “And so, I can still be a mom and have work. Because I am not a Reagan, I get those extra days off. So it’s worked out beautifully, and I’m having a good time.”

The actor plays Baez on the show who works on cases with Danny as his partner. There are rare moments where she gets to interact with other characters. One of them was for the family’s wedding, and recently she was a guest for dinner.

That dinner scene in “Triumph Over Trauma” was a big deal. Ramirez revealed what was on her mind being in the same room as Selleck.

“I so badly wanted to say something to Tom about the fact that, ‘My grandmother was such a huge fan of yours,’” she told PopCulture.com. “But I knew I wouldn’t have been able to get out the words without crying.”

She then said, “But I kept thinking about her while I was there. And it almost made me feel more comfortable and calm, and just was able to really take in the surroundings and the warmth and the fact that they welcomed me there.”

It just goes to show family is important to the show, but also to the actors. The non-Reagan roles leave more time to be with family.
