You might be surprised to learn the food on Blue Bloods is real. When you watch the Reagans sit down for dinner, they are eating real food. However, not everyone eats during the dinner scenes. Some actors choose to push food around on their plate because the scenes are long, and it would likely make them sick if they ate every time a scene is re-shot.

Although some actors pretend to eat, they do a pretty good job of it, according to Jim Lillis, property manager for Blue Bloods. He told The Virginian-Pilot some of the actors are quite convincing. “Some are good at faking it. They are very good at making it look like they’re really enjoying a hearty dinner,” he said.

During a 2014 interview with Rachael Ray, actress Amy Carlson discussed what goes on behind the scenes of Blue Bloods. She said one question she gets a lot from fans is whether the wine at Reagan family dinners is real. Carlson revealed the wine is not real. “Nope, it’s not alcohol,” said Carlson.

In his interview with People magazine, Donny Wahlberg revealed what’s really in the actors’ cups. “Someone asked me if we get drunk because we have a lot of wine during the dinner scene, but, sadly, it’s just grape juice. Sorry, guys. And ‘Scotch’ is iced tea. I think they give us decaffeinated or we’d be bouncing off the walls.”

Who eats the most food during Blue Bloods family dinners? If you guessed Tom Selleck, you’re wrong. It turns out Wahlberg is the cast member who eats the most food during Reagan family dinners. During her Rachael Ray interview, Carlson said Wahlberg sometimes even eats between takes.

Wahlberg told People magazine that unlike Selleck he really eats, and he eats a lot of food. “Tom just pretends eat, but I’m the only one who really eats. I literally ate 20 pounds of asparagus today. I try to only stick to vegetables, which leads to other problems. Fortunately, we wrapped a little early today so the problems will be personal problems and won’t be affecting everyone else at the table,” joked Wahlberg.
