Penelope has feelings for Colin in ‘Bridgerton’

In season 1 of Bridgerton, Penelope is presented to society. It quickly becomes clear that she has strong feelings for Colin. However, at the time Colin sees her more like a sibling or close friend. He begins to court Marina Thompson, a distant relative of the Featheringtons.

Penelope is distressed by this and desperately attempts to sabotage their relationship. Nothing works, until Penelope’s alter ego Lady Whistledown reveals that Marina is pregnant. Colin is more upset about the fact that Marina tried to deceive than the actual pregnancy itself.

Marina learns that the father of her baby, George has died. His brother Phillip offers to marry her so that she will be taken care of and she eventually accepts. Meanwhile, Penelope prepares to reveal her feelings to Colin, but he tells her his plans to travel before she can go through with it.

Could ‘Bridgerton’ Season 2 explore Colin and Penelope’s romantic origins?

The trailer for Bridgerton Season 2 revealed that Colin will return from his travels. Entertainment Weekly teased that he has “also deepened his relationship with Penelope via maintaining a steady correspondence with her while he was away.”

Julia Quinn’s fourth book in the Bridgerton series, Romancing Mister Bridgerton, tells the story of Colin and Penelope’s love. Part of the synopsis for this book reads, “When Colin returns to London from a trip abroad, he discovers nothing in his life is quite the same—especially Penelope Featherington! The girl who was always simply… there is suddenly the girl haunting his dreams.”

Still, Penelope and Colin’s romance will likely be a slow burn if it occurs in Bridgerton Season 2. Colin actor Luke Newton teased a bit of his character’s mindset in the new season. “He’s not focusing so much on romance and that aspect of his life anymore,” Newton told Entertainment Weekly. “He’s looking for new pursuits and different ventures that maybe don’t cause as much heartbreak.”

Nicola Coughlin explains how Penelope has changed since season 1

Penelope has always been an intelligent and sensible character. At the end of season 1, she was heartbroken to learn of the death of her father. Actor Nicola Coughlan teased that her character has changed and matured by the time of Bridgerton Season 2. “She’s lost her father and that brings a level of having to grow up immediately,” Coughlan told Entertainment Weekly.

“She realized a lot of things. She can see the power she has on society now. And the relationship [with Colin] has taken a step up. She is a writer; she expresses herself that way. She’s much freer than when she is in person. So, he now sees her with different eyes because he’s seen this girl in the letters.”

Bridgerton Season 2 drops to Netflix on March 25.
