Who is Queen Charlotte in ‘Bridgerton’?

In 1813 Britain, Queen Charlotte has the final say during the marriage season. Every year the new bachelorettes must present themselves to the queen. Queen Charlotte looks for her “diamond” of the season that will sparkle and be the envy of every other young woman.

In the series, not much is known about Queen Charlotte’s backstory. Fans learn of her marriage to an ill King Geroge III and that their daughter died at a young age. Unlike how most historical accounts depict Queen Charlotte, in Bridgerton, she is of African descent.

According to Oprah Daily, Chris Van Dusen saw an opportunity to marry the books and the debated historical fact of Queen Charlotte’s lineage.

“What really struck me with the books from the beginning is that this was an opportunity to marry history and fantasy in a really exciting, interesting way. So in Queen Charlotte, that was the history,” explained Van Dusen. The Bridgerton spinoff looks to explore further the young future queen’s role in British society.

‘Bridgerton’ spinoff storyline implies how Queen Charlotte created a modern ton

Netflix and Shondaland officially announced the cast list for the Bridgerton spinoff and details of the main storyline. According to Netflix, “Centered on Queen Charlotte’s rise to prominence and power, this Bridgerton-verse prequel tells the story of how the young Queen’s marriage to King George sparked both a great love story and a societal shift, creating the world of the Ton inherited by the characters in Bridgerton.”

Bridgerton Season 2 already teased a bit of the queen’s tumultuous backstory in marrying the king. When the king makes an appearance and mistakes the queen for a younger version, Edwina reveals a small detail. She explains how she knows the complex and long journey they had before their marriage.

According to the details of the Bridgerton spinoff, there is an assumption that Charlotte’s African lineage causes turmoil when she arrives to marry the king.

Her character details explain, “Betrothed to the mysterious King of England against her will, Charlotte arrives in London only to realize she was not exactly what the royals were expecting. As she learns to navigate the palace, the ‘ton, and her unpredictable husband, she grows into one of Europe’s most unforgettable monarchs.” The press release also explains “a changing, modernizing Britain.”
