Why is Britney in a conservatorship?

Britney Spears rose to fame in the ’90s, and the paparazzi began to follow her everywhere. According to the 2021 documentary Framing Britney Spears, the media was a large part of her breakdown. In 2007, Spears and Kevin Federline divorced, sharing custody of their two children. However, in 2008, she had a series of erratic behavior heavily documented by the media. Then the pop icon made headlines for shaving her head and hitting a photographer’s car with an umbrella.

Next, Jamie Spears stepped in, forcing her to be hospitalized and establishing the conservatorship over her. Her father continued to extend the conservatorship throughout the 13 years that followed, even though Spears continued to perform.

What did Britney Spears say in court?

Spears addressed Judge Penny in probate court on June 23 and begged for her life back. The pop singer did not hold back. She explained that her conservatorship team wouldn’t let her remove her IUD even though she wants to marry Sam Asghari and have more children. Fans outside the courthouse listened as the star explained how the team put her on the drug lithium without her approval because she said “no” to another Vegas show. Her agonizing testimony continued for 24 minutes.

What happened after Britney’s testimony?

After Spears’ testimony, the court took a recess and stopped the public audio feed. Britney Spears’ next hearing date is set for July 14. The director of Framing Britney Spears, Samantha Stark, reported afterward that nothing has changed for the star.

“After she spoke, the judge and several lawyers commended her for her courage,” Stark tweeted. None of them acknowledged what she said or gave any indication they would investigate her disturbing accusations of abuse. “She left the hearing in the same position, with the same people she said were abusing her, in charge of almost every aspect of her life and finances. There was no action plan put into place for what happens next.”
