Britney Spears had a heavy hand in a lot of aspects of her 2002 dramedy Crossroads. Furthermore, it turns out that the movie’s friendships have everything to do with the singer’s personal friendships. Here’s what she had to say about how those relationships inspired the Tamra Davis-directed film

The singer told MTV News that she was inspired by her three best friends

In a 2002 interview, Spears shared that the road trip movie, which centers around three childhood friends, reflects real-life friendships.

The film stars Spears as recent high school graduate Lucy Wagner, along with Zoe Saldana as ‘Southern belle’ Kit and Taryn Manning as pregnant teen Mimi. Anson Mount co-starred as their ride to Los Angeles and Lucy’s love interest, Ben.

“When I was younger, I had my three best friends, till this day,” Spears told MTV News. “I still have my Courtney, Jansen, and Laura Lynn. The whole concept came up of me being with my girlfriends and us growing up with each other.”

Spears speaks the truth. Her social media posts attest to the long-lasting friendships. 12 years after Crossroads premiered, Spears was still hanging out with the three girlfriends. A September 2014 Instagram and Twitter post by Spears shows pictures of her three pals in Las Vegas. “Hanging with my original posse – Laura Lynne, Jansen & Cortney!” she wrote “Girls weekend in Vegas!”

In the video interview, Spears revealed that she wanted the movie to touch the hearts of teens. In it, the main characters face some important life decisions and realizations.

“I wanted to do a teen movie, but I wanted to do something that teenagers could watch and be touched by,” she explained. Moreover, she commented on the characters and how they fulfill each other despite their differences.

“All of them have their own little issues, but at the same time, they have each other,” continued the singer. “And at the end of the day, that’s what matters. We all have our problems, but if we have our friends there we can talk to them about [anything]…you know, that makes you feel safe. And that was the whole idea behind the movie.”

Despite growing up, Britney Spears says those friendships pass the test of time

Britney’s fame doesn’t seem to affect her friendships. She said it was a “cool feeling” to know her friends would always be there for her — similarly, Lucy, Mimi, and Kit share a lifelong bond.

“I totally remember when I was like 12 and 13,” she said. “My girlfriends, we had our backs. We were very very close. I don’t know if that’s a southern thing, or if it’s just a nationwide thing. And I think it’s cool because when you make bonds like that, a lot of times at that young age, you do continue to keep that.”

Spears continued, saying that those friendships remain poised on ice; her friends are always ready to resume, even after a separation.

“As you get older — still to this day, when I go home and see my cousin Laura Lynne, we start off just where we left off,” Spears continued. “It’s just like ‘hey, what’s up?’ And that’s a cool feeling to know that you have that.”

Likewise, it’s a cool feeling to learn that Crossroads’ Kit and Mimi are rooted in Spears’ real life relationships
