Jason Derulo’s ‘Savage Love’ version with BTS went to no. 1 recently

Derulo released his song “Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat)” in June 2020. The song, which is also credited to producer Jawsh 685, has attracted a lot of attention on the internet. Most notably, it became a dance challenge on TikTok with people all over the world participating.

BTS collaborated with Derulo and Jawsh 685 on a remix version that was released on Oct. 2, 2020. The BTS remix version eventually charted at no. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100—a good seven spots higher than the original.

Forbes writer Bryan Rolli shared that the song’s recent chart success shows how much influence BTS has. The group used to rely on the help of Western artists to climb up the Billboard charts, but now, as Rolli put it, “the tables have turned.”

Fans slam Jason Derulo for not giving BTS credit in his celebration

On Oct. 18, Derulo posted a video on Tiktok of himself celebrating “Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat)” reaching the no. 1 spot. He was seen at a restaurant with several TikTok stars.

Shortly after the video was uploaded, BTS fans began calling out Derulo for not giving BTS credit when their remix version was what got him the chart success in the first place. Derulo did not mention BTS in the video and notably used the version of “Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat)” that did not include them.

On Twitter, the hashtag #JasonDeruloIsOverParty began trending, with fans slamming him for allegedly “disrespecting” BTS.

Meanwhile, one person wrote on Reddit, “How can you forget the artists that was the reason why your single became #1? He also forget to credit Jawsh, not just BTS. So, yes. It is THAT deep.”

A few hours after the backlash started, Derulo eventually made a tweet crediting Jawsh 685 and BTS. He posted his TikTok celebration video and wrote, “Wish @BTS_twt @jawsh_685 was here for the celebration! We did it! #1 on billboard chart! Savage love.”

While Derulo eventually did give BTS credit, fans are still not happy. Many people are bringing up Derulo’s recent interview with Ellen DeGeneres as evidence that the singer allegedly only cared about BTS’s fame.

In the interview, Derulo shared that BTS first came up to him at an award show. “I actually met them a couple of years ago,” Derulo said. “They told me how much they appreciate my work and whatnot. It was great but I didn’t know who they were at that moment yet.”

However, they caught his attention later when they won a fan-voted “competition,” beating out the likes of Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande.

BTS fans are now accusing Derulo of “clout chasing.” A Reddit user said, “He talked about how he actually had no idea who they were and only when he saw ARMYs win an award for best fandom over Western stans he realized how popular they were… Then he chose to do the remix with them, which just comes across as clout chasing.”
