For BTS fans, Sept. 4, 2019 marks the two-year anniversary of the release of Jimin’s song, “Serendipity.” While Jimin’s solo song was originally released with BTS’s EP Love Yourself: Her on Sept. 8, 2017, the music video for the song came out as a trailer for the album on Sept. 4, 2017. A full-length version of “Serendipity” was later included on BTS’s album Love Yourself: Answer. With over 114 million views on YouTube, the song is one of the most beloved songs among BTS fans.

‘Serendipity’ is a solo song by Jimin

For BTS’s Wings album and Love Yourself albums, each member of BTS recorded a solo song. BTS covers a wide range of musical genres. The group incorporates pop, pop rock, R&B, hip-hop, EDM, and more into their music. With so many talented individuals, solo songs give members the chance to showcase their skills across different genres.

“Serendipity” is sung by BTS member Jimin as a solo song. Jimin has released three solo songs. He released “Lie” with BTS’s album Wings, “Serendipity” as part of Love Yourself: Her and Love Yourself: Answer, and “Promise” as an unofficial BTS song on SoundCloud.

Earlier in 2019, Jimin set a record as the first Korean artist to have three solo songs earn 50 million Spotify streams. There is a striking difference between “Lie” and “Serendipity.” While “Lie” is eerie and haunting, “Serendipity” is dream-like and Jimin’s voice is nothing short of angelic.

The song received critical acclaim

“Serendipity” received universal acclaim from music critics. The song is classified as alternative R&B. The lyrics of “Serendipity” are gender neutral and deal with the ideas of love and identity.

“On the exquisite album opener ‘Serendipity,’ lead vocalist Jimin sounds equal parts sensual and soothing against the sparse, delicate electronic-tinged R&B arrangement—a fascinating start for an album from a group best known for their memorable stage performances and rap-forward sound, but a welcome one nonetheless,” wrote Monique Melendez for SPIN.

What is the BTS song ‘Serendipity’ about?

RM from BTS helped write and compose “Serendipity.” In an interview with Billboard, he gave insight about the meaning behind the song.

“When I wrote the lyrics, melodies and the first themes of ‘Serendipity,’ I tried to come up with some rare things you find in life, something very special, like the calico, three-striped cat; things that have extraordinary meanings in people’s lives. I wanted to share this moment,” he said.

According to RM, the lyrics were purposely kept gender neutral. “The lyrics were based on rare and special things in life. So, I thought, those feelings transcend genders, cultures and barriers between people,” he told Billboard.
