Pop star Camila Cabello has millions of fans, but she once revealed she didn’t feel she had any friends during her time in Fifth Harmony. She credits being close with her mother as helping her through and keeping her balanced. But she also said the time they spent together was “probably to the extreme” because she seemingly felt so alone otherwise.

What did Cabello reveal about how being close to her mom uplifted her at a time when she felt she “never had any friends”?

Camila Cabello has a close relationship with her mom

Cabello immigrated to the United States with her mother, who supposedly told her they were going to Disney World. They moved to Miami when Cabello was almost seven and her father joined them later. But it seems the journey and experience bonded her with her mom.

During an interview with Bustle, Cabello referred to her mom as “the better half” of her brain. And she once shared that a tattoo on her pinky reading “it’s a mystery” is a tribute to her mother. “It’s a pinky swear to her to remember, no matter what happens, everything is gonna turn out well. There’s no telling how, but it always does,” she explained.

Cabello revealed another reason they are closely bonded is because they spent so much time together during her early years as a pop star.

Camila Cabello: ‘I never had any friends’

During the Bustle interview, Cabello admitted it’s “hard” for her to get close to people. And that seemingly included her Fifth Harmony bandmates. She said she spent much of her free time with her mom while she was in the group.

“I’ve been [working] since I was 15. I’ve been traveling so much, and it’s been really hard for me to water the soil for friendships,” she revealed. “It was always me and my mom. Probably to the extreme. Because I never had any friends.”

This may not be surprising to all Fifth Harmony fans as Cabello’s exit was rumored to be due to quarrelsome relationships in the group. But she did find some other famous faces to call friends after leaving.

From no friends to being more than friends with Shawn Mendes

Maybe she didn’t feel like she had many friends at one point, but she counts Taylor Swift and Shawn Mendes as some of her oldest and closest friends in the industry. And Mendes has been her boyfriend for years. So, she seemingly doesn’t have to feel friendless anymore.

Cabello credited Swift with teaching her about being a good companion. She said, “Taylor has always been so kind and supportive and also goes out of her way to give you artist advice.”

And of her boyfriend Mendes, she said, “I think we’re both sensitive. I’m really lucky to be able to surround myself with tenderness; it’s really important to me.” She added that “there’s a lot of sweetness and tenderness” between them.

So, Cabello may have had Mendes and Swift in mind while writing her third album — “Familia” – which she said is about “chosen family.”

Cabello explained, “This whole album to me was inspired by two things — family and food. Your family by blood, but also your chosen family.”

She further elaborated by saying it’s “who you want to sit at the dinner table with, cook a meal for, get wine-drunk with, and dance in the living room with.”

There’s no doubt her fans — and friends — are eager to hear it.
