Camila Cabello talks about getting ‘papped’ at the beach

As an A-list celebrity, Cabello is frequently bombarded by paparazzi (“paps”) and described a recent outing at a Miami beach club. Cabello gave her followers a birds-eye view of how she feels being the object of countless photographs while in a bathing suit.

“Every time I’ve felt super vulnerable and unprepared,” the “Don’t Go Yet” singer wrote on Instagram. “I’ve worn bikinis that were too small and paid no mind to how I looked, then saw pictures online and comments and been so upset. I reminded myself when it impacted my self-esteem that I was thinking the culture’s thoughts and not my own. A culture who has gotten so used to an image of what a ‘healthy’ woman’s body looks like that is completely not real for a lot of women.”

Cabello shared the lengths women go to in order to appear what society deems as acceptable when it comes to body size, noting how she still struggles with her own image.

“Photoshop, restrictive eating, over exercising, and choosing angles that make our bodies look different than how they are in the moment and in their natural form, when we take a deep breath, when we eat a meal, when we allow the waves to tussle us around,” she explained. “I remind myself of this, listen to podcasts on intuitive eating, follow women who accept their cellulite, stretch marks, bellies, bloating, and weight fluctuations… and still.”

Fans of Camila Cabello rally in support

Cabello’s message has already received over a million likes and fans continue to post their support of the “Señorita” singer’s honesty.

“This message is so important. You are so beautiful and you are REAL. Thank you for sharing your vulnerabilities with us. Culture’s expectations on woman are insane and incredibly unhealthy,” a fan wrote.

“Camila thank you for being vulnerable & sharing this experience here on social media, you’re somebody I’ve always looked up to,” another posted.

“I’m so sorry this is what is classed as ‘normal’ for you. When it most definitely is anything but. This might not help but remember you are beautiful and strong as you are,” a follower shared.

“This was very vulnerable of you to post and I wish more celebrities were open about these things. I wish there were enough women in your kind of position that would do this as well,” one commented.

“Thank you for speaking your truth. The world needs more of this,” a fan noted.

‘Bam Bam’ singer had a purpose in her post

Explaining her thought process while she was on the beach and subjected to paparazzi snaps, Cabello admitted that she focused more on being photographed than on having some time in the sun.

“Today I got a new bikini, a whole f***** cute outfit, put lip gloss on, and didn’t eat anything too heavy before going in the OCEAN cause I knew it was gonna be basically a whole photoshoot,” she wrote. “I held my core so tight my abs hurt and didn’t breathe and barely smiled and was so self conscious of where the paps were the whole time I couldn’t let go and relax and do what we’re meant to do when we go out into nature.”

Cabello detailed her experience in the hopes of shining a light on the continued preoccupation with women’s physical appearance rather than overall well-being.

“I wanted to talk about this because we see pictures of women and praise them for looking good, for looking fit or ‘healthy,’ but what is health if you are so fixated on what your body looks like that your mental health suffers and you can’t enjoy your life?” she posted.
