Princess Diana was always suspicious of Camilla Parker Bowles

Princess Diana was just 19 when she wed Prince Charles in 1981. She naively assumed she was getting a fairytale ending. What she did not expect was to be tied to a husband she had very little in common with. Worst still, the prince was still in love with Camilla.

In fact, though the duchess and the prince did not begin their romantic relationship again until the mid-80s, the princess was always suspicious of Prince Charles’ former lover. The women reportedly had a big blowout argument about it. In Diana: In Her Own Words, the late princess recalled.

I said, ‘I know what’s going on between you and Charles and I just want you to know tha. Camilla then replied, ‘You’ve got everything you ever wanted. You’ve got all the men in the world fall in love with you and you’ve got two beautiful children, what more do you want?’ I said, ‘I want my husband. I’m sorry I’m in the way … and it must be hell for both of you. But I do know what’s going on. Don’t treat me like an idiot.’

Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles’ relationship leaked to the press in 1992

In reality, Prince Charles and Camilla began their affair in 1986. The future king reportedly used to go to great lengths to hide infidelity from his wife. Royal biographer Andrew Morton wrote in his book, Diana: Her True Story,,

Charles’ bodyguard was forced to accompany the prince on illicit nighttime visits to see Camilla, while his chef and butler were instructed to cook dinner even though they knew Charles would be out with his lover. Charles’ valet was instructed to mark up the TV listings guide to make it look like the prince had spent the night at home watching television. When Charles broke his arm in a polo accident, his staff was responsible for listening to police radios to track Diana’s journey to the hospital, so they could get Camilla out of Charles’ room before the princess arrived.

Eventually, the press learned about the affair when a kinky phone call between the lovers leaked to the press.

Camilla Parker Bowles has never addressed that bread roll rumor

Since Princess Diana was so beloved, Camilla, in particular, faced a media firestorm. Past rumors that she’d had bread rolls thrown at her also persisted. Princess Diana even got candid about the affair saying, “There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.”  a BBC interview in 1995

According to Express, even before Princess Diana’s interview, there had been reports that Camilla had bread rolls thrown her way following the leak of the phone call. The bread rolls rumors have not been confirmed. However, Camilla did shock everyone with how she handled the media firestorm.

“Silence and discretion are Camilla’s trademarks,” journalist Mary Braid noted. “This is a woman who has endured without a whisper an avalanche of public insults, even a pelting with bread rolls by a customer in her local supermarket after Prince Charles told millions about their affair on television (she no longer does her own shopping).”
