Once upon a time, a beautiful woman married a British prince in a lavish wedding ceremony watched by millions. But their love story didn’t mirror a fairy tale. Instead, Prince Charles and Princess Diana‘s union was littered with lies, scandals, and infidelity.

The Prince of Wales started seeing his former flame Camilla Parker Bowles behind his wife’s back and when Diana learned what was going on she decided to confront his mistress. The princess though wasn’t expecting the response she got from Camilla.

What Princess Diana said when she confronted Camilla about her affair with Prince Charles

In the secretly-recorded audio tapes Princess Diana gave to Andrew Morton for his book Diana Her True Story In Her Own Words, she revealed that when she realized Charles was having an affair with Camilla, she decided that she was going to confront the prince’s other woman. So in 1989, Diana attended a party no one expected her to for Camilla’s sister’s 40th birthday. The Princess of Wales calculated everything she would say when she got Camilla alone and spoke to her face to face.

At the event, Diana ended up interrupting a conversation between Camilla, Charles, and another man and asked to speak to Camilla privately. According to the princess, Camilla looked “really uncomfortable and put her head down.” Diana recalled saying to the men: “OK, boys, I’m just going to have a quick word with Camilla and I’ll be up in a minute.” The two men then “shot upstairs like chickens with no heads,” Diana said (per the Daily Mail), adding: “I could feel, upstairs, all hell breaking loose — ‘What is she going to do?’”

Diana admitted that she was “terrified” of Camilla, but remained “deathly calm” and did exactly what she went there to do. “The voice inside me had said, ‘just go for it,’” the princess explained. “I said, ‘I know what’s going on between you and Charles and I just want you to know that.’”

The response Camilla gave Diana

Diana then revealed that Camilla said to her: “You’ve got everything you ever wanted. You’ve got all the men in the world fall in love with you and you’ve got two beautiful children, what more do you want?’”

The princess fired back: “I want my husband! I’m sorry I’m in the way… and it must be hell for both of you. But I do know what’s going on. Don’t treat me like an idiot.’”

After the party, Diana confessed that she and Charles had a fight saying that the future king “was all over me like a bad rash, and I cried like I have never cried before.”

Biographer says Diana felt ‘totally aggrieved that Camilla wouldn’t go away’

That confrontation did not stop Camilla and Charles from seeing each other. The duo continued to carry on their affair despite the fact that Diana knew what was happening.

On the HeirPod podcast, royal biographer Robert Jobson spoke about how Princess Diana must have felt after getting that type of response from her husband’s mistress.

“She felt totally aggrieved that Camilla wouldn’t go away,” Jobson told listeners (per Express). He then recounted Camilla’s nonchalant response about “Oh well you have children. What else do you want?” and added: “If people can actually get inside of that, you can understand the rage that Diana was feeling. She, as a married woman with two small children, was trapped in an unhappy marriage.”

Charles and Princess Diana divorced in 1996, one year before her tragic death. In 2005, the Prince of Wales married Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.
