Can You Look as Good as Jennifer Lopez Without Plastic Surgery?

It’s no secret that celebrities get plastic surgery so they can improve their looks. Jennifer Lopez has been accused of going under the knife, but she says she hasn’t had any cosmetic procedures. If you want to look as young and smooth as J.Lo, can you really do it without intervention from a plastic surgeon?

It’s no secret that celebrities get plastic surgery so they can improve their looks. Jennifer Lopez has been accused of going under the knife, but she says she hasn’t had any cosmetic procedures. If you want to look as young and smooth as J.Lo, can you really do it without intervention from a plastic surgeon?

Dr. Roxanne Grawe, M.D. is here to answer that question and more. Here’s what she had to say.

Showbiz Cheat Sheet: What are some of the most popular procedures requested by celebrities?

Roxanne Grawe: By far, the number one surgery celebrities want is a Brazilian butt lift. From rappers, performers, and yes, those who are famous for just being famous – we see TikToks daily showing off the “dumptruck”/”peach.”

This procedure takes fat from unwanted areas and fills in the booty to give a lift, volume, and curves you just can’t get at the gym. For those who are not blessed with enough fat, Sculptra injections can do the trick. This is what it is rumored that Kylie Jenner does to get her curves. (Although she says it’s puberty).

These injections can be expensive, but they can be done in the office. Sculptra is a filler that entices the body to create more collagen and lasts up to two years, although it never totally goes away once your body has made collagen in its place.

Breast augmentation is still one of the number one procedures in Hollywood, although the celebrities are not going quite as big as they were 10 or20 years ago. Full breasts are in, but the trend is to have your top curves smaller than your hips.

CS: Jennifer Lopez claims she has never had anything done to her face. Is it possible to look this good without cosmetic procedures?

RG: We can’t know for sure if she is just blessed with great genetics and a good skin care regimen or if she has secrets she will never tell, but for the average person you can’t have a J.Lo glow, that sharp jawline or that perfect skin without maintenance treatments. She doesn’t seem to age!

Great medical-grade skincare is key to reverse and prevent the signs of aging–retinol, vitamin C, and sunscreen are the most important for fighting the damage from UV light, natural aging, and pollution. (My favorites are ROXY skincare and ZO® Skin Health).

In-office treatments are excellent for maintaining that glow – including Dermaplanes, which removes the peach fuzz so your make-up goes on flawlessly, and enhances your body to fight wrinkles by increasing collagen production. And Hydrafacial–unclogging pores and infusing the skin with salicylic acid and antioxidants.

Finally, you can’t get that well-defined jawline naturally without removing your double chin (Kybella or submental liposuction) and jawline contouring with fillers. This is the best way to define your chin and make it look like you have amazing genetics as well. (Your secret is safe.)

CS: In general, how has the pandemic affected the popularity of cosmetic procedures?

RG: You would think the pandemic would have slowed things down as people are going out less, staying in more, and wearing masks. But the opposite is true (at least at our practice in Ohio).

We have more than tripled our cosmetic consults this past year, and even though we are operating more days a week, we are scheduled out 6 to 10 months for longer surgeries. Our injectables and laser business is booked every day for months.

What is the reason? Who knows! Perhaps people are at home looking in the mirror more and have finally decided to move forward with the procedure they had been thinking about for years.

CS: What advice would you give regular folks who want to get a procedure so they can look like their favorite stars.

RG: Get started and find someone you can trust. Be honest with yourself about what your goals are and go for it. There are a lot of minimally invasive procedures that really help you look refreshed without looking fake or overdone.

For example, Botox takes a few minutes and is very easy to have done. Within three to 14 days, your wrinkles are smooth, but you don’t look stiff or frozen. Not only does Botox decrease your wrinkles and prevent you from getting wrinkles in the future, but it also makes your skin look brilliant because without wrinkles, there are no peaks and valleys to your skin. It is so smooth that the light reflects like a lake–and you have that J.Lo glow!

Surgery – Doing something for yourself like having that tummy tuck after having kids or making your breasts bigger – it feels selfish so it’s hard to do. But, in reality, you can’t do any diets or exercise to change these things – stop being mean to yourself! Doing something to make you feel more confident is beneficial to yourself and those around you.

CS: What advice would you give people who want to upgrade their looks, but they aren’t ready for major surgery?

RG: Ask about nonsurgical options! There are usually a lot of them. They may take longer to get the final results or cost more – but all these things have to fit your lifestyle and budget. Start slow – like Botox and fillers or Kybella to dissolve submental fat. Once you see how confident the little things make you, you might consider more invasive surgery to get the look you want.

A good skin care routine can make a world of difference. Botox smoothing your wrinkles can give you that glow! Undereye filler can make you look rested and refreshed without looking “fake.” A consult with an injector can give you a good idea of what can be done and cost without having to make a big commitment.

Be realistic. Sometimes big things can only be done with surgery. Decide what is important to you and what you are willing to spend/risk/recover from–and then make a plan.

Find a support person – your spouse, or a great friend, your mom, or another person going through the same things. You need someone who supports you to help cheer you on when you are recovering. Surgery isn’t something you can do alone. It will be worth it, but you need support to get through recovery and onto living your best life!
