Carrie Underwood switched it up at the CMT Awards, reaching new heights during her “Ghost Story” performance. The singer took home two awards for her duet “If I Didn’t Love You” with Jason Aldean. However, her daring aerial skills stole the spotlight and captivated viewers.

Carrie Underwood flys during an aerial performance of ‘Ghost Story’

Fresh off of debuting “Ghost Story” at the Grammy Awards, Carrie Underwood performed her new song on another award show a little more than a week later. This time, she switched things up, channeling singer Pink in an exciting aerial routine. The performance was the first time Underwood showed her aerial skills on television.

The pre-recorded performance was filmed at the Resorts World Theatre, home of Underwood’s Las Vegas residency. However, the singer was in attendance at the awards ceremony in Nashville.

Underwood, wearing a dramatic one-leg lavender jumpsuit, performed “Ghost Story” mainly on the ground until she took off toward the end, flanked by aerial performers on both sides. Using hanging silks often associated with aerial performers, she levitated in the air while belting out high notes.

Underwood then moved her legs into a position on the silks that left her hanging horizontally while singing. It was extra thrilling because the singer was handling her microphone during these aerial transitions.

Purple was the color of the night for Carrie Underwood

While the stage was draped in purple for her “Ghost Story” performance, Underwood kept the theme going by wearing a short, sparkly, purple leopard print dress to the CMT Awards. She attended the show and walked the red carpet with her husband of almost 12 years, Mike Fisher.

The “Before He Cheats” singer is the most awarded artist of all time at the CMT Awards with 25 awards. On Monday evening, she took home two more trophies for her duet “If I Didn’t Love You” with Jason Aldean, including Video of the Year.

She took to Instagram to thank her fans. “What an incredible night at the @cmt Awards! Thank you, fans, for all the support and for always showing up for us! These belong to you!”

Underwood also shouted out Aldean’s fans, “Thank you, @jasonaldean for asking me to sing this amazing song with you and to all his fans for all the love! I’m forever grateful to you all!”

‘Ghost Story’ performance reminiscent of Pink’s aerial performances

Perhaps Underwood was inspired by another singer for her CMT Awards performance.

No one does aerial award show performances as well as Pink. The “So What” singer shocked audiences at the 2009 Video Music Awards when she wrapped herself in silk and flew during a performance of “Sober.”

She gained more attention for her jaw-dropping “Glitter in the Air” performance at the 2010 Grammy Awards. Since then, she’s performed aerial routines with her daughter at award ceremonies.

The Daily Mail reported that during a 2020 conversation with her choreographer Dreya Weber, Pink said she was inspired to try it after watching a Cher show in Las Vegas. “’I remember looking at all the aerialists and being like, “Why doesn’t the singer ever do that? I wanna do that. I wanna have fun.”
