Carrie Underwood‘s name has been in the news a lot recently with the release of her single “Ghost Story,” her upcoming album, her aerial performance at the CMT Music Awards, and now her admission that she’s scared of turtles. Yes, you read that correctly. The country music songbird, who is an animal lover, has revealed that the one animal she’s afraid of is turtles.

Here’s what she said about that as well as how she trained for her high-flying award show performance.

Carrie Underwood recently discussed her CMT Music Awards aerial act

Underwood recently joined John & Tammy in the Morning on 103.7 KSON San Diego prior to her performance at Stagecoach. She spoke about how she trained for her daring aerial performance at the CMT Music Awards.

“After the ACMs I kind of had my first lesson to see if I could even do it,” Underwood told the show hosts. “I had them come hang one up in my gym. My gym ceilings are kind of tall, but not super tall, so I couldn’t get up off the ground, and I tried it again with Brenda, who is our aerialist choreographer in Vegas, and she’s like, ‘Let’s see how you do if I raise you up a little bit.’ And I’m like, ‘I don’t know how far I’m off the ground. I have no concept where the floor is.’”

She added: “The hardest part was figuring out how I was going to use my mic … keeping my mic towards my mouth.”

During that same interview, Underwood also gave the reason for exactly why she fears turtles.

“Turtles are the only animals I’m kind of scared of,” the “Cry Pretty” singer admitted. “I’m fine with snakes. I’m fine with spiders. I’ll remove whatever is running around the house. I’ve got to — my husband doesn’t like those things. I’m like ‘I’ll pick up the snake, it’s fine.’ Turtles, I’ll save one if it’s walking across the road. I’ll stop and run it across the road, but I’m freaked out.”

She then explained: “I think as a kid I would catch them, and I constantly got bit. If you try to hug them, they will bite you. … Sea turtles are a bit different. They’re kind of majestic, and they’re like flying through the ocean.”
