Practically everyone knows about Pete Davidson’s whirlwind relationship with Ariana Grande. The pair began dating in May 2018 and got engaged just a few weeks after going public with their romance. They spent the next months living happily as an engaged couple until October 2018, when they decided to call it quits.

But what many might not know about the couple’s relationship is that the day before they started dating, Davidson dumped his then-girlfriend Cazzie David and did so in the worst way possible — via text message.

David, who’s the daughter of comedian Larry David, began dating Davidson in 2016. Though the pair never spoke openly about their romance, they did showcase their relationship in the public eye by attending numerous events together.

To fans, it seemed like things were going well between David and Davidson. But in 2018, the couple decided to call it quits, with the comedian confirming the news in a candid interview on Complex’s “Open Late with Peter Rosenberg.”

“We’re not together anymore,” Davidson told Rosenberg. “Very talented girl, she’ll be great and she’ll be fine. Yeah, I think she’ll be okay.”

Davidson started dating Ariana Grande a day after he broke up with David

In her new collection of essays, No One Asked For This, which is featured in The Los Angeles Times, David shares some intimate details of her and Davidson’s two-year relationship.

According to the writer, she and Pete “were infatuated” with one another. The comedian even got several tattoos in David’s honor, including her name on his ring finger and a tattoo of her favorite emoji on his neck.

But despite having strong feelings for each other, David admits that she had trouble convincing the King of Staten Island star how much she loved him.

Eventually, David broke things off with Davidson. However, she quickly regretted her decision and tried to win him back days later.

But Davidson wasn’t interested in getting back together, saying he was the “happiest he’d ever been” and officially ended things with David via text message.

The following day, David discovered Davidson had started a relationship with pop star Ariana Grande while traveling to her sister’s graduation with her father.

The writer was heartbroken by this news and revealed in her essay that she “shook uncontrollably in [her father’s] arms for the entire flight” before curling up on the bathroom floor to wake up “screaming in agony.”

David has since overcome that difficult period

Over the next few months, David struggled to come to terms with her split from Davidson, mainly because Ari and Pete’s fans weren’t the nicest to her on social media.

David also couldn’t get images of the couple out of her head as she frequently imagined them “immediately falling in love, accompanied by audio of her baby voice whispering sweet nothings in his ear, dubbed over his past declarations of love and trust to me.”

Eventually, David overcame that extremely challenging time and now looking back, recalls that period being “a really pivotal moment in my life.”

“And writing about it has caused me a ton of anxiety, especially because I talk so much about hating the attention it brought me,” she wrote. “Why would I bring more attention to myself by writing about it? But there’s nothing that’s gonna be worse than what I already experienced with that.”

Though getting over her split from Davidson wasn’t easy for David, that difficult time is now a thing in the past.

Today, David and Davidson are actually friends. She even thanked him in the acknowledgments in her book, writing, “Pete. I love you … Your bravery inspires me and your friendship means the world to me.”
