Chadwick Boseman Filmed One More Movie Before He Died — Here’s When You Can See It
The death of Chadwick Boseman on Aug. 28 took many fans by surprise. According to a statement from his family on his social media, Boseman was privately battling colon cancer. His death at only 43 suggests all the great work he was yet to do. Boseman did finish one more movie that will still come out.
Chadwick Boseman made seven movies while battling cancer
The family’s statement said Boseman was diagnosed with Stage III colon cancer in 2016. His first appearance as T’Challa, Black Panther, in Captain America: Civil War opened in theaters that year. He also had the Netflix movie A Message for the King in 2016.
The statement said Boseman underwent surgeries and chemotherapy from the time he was making 2017’s Marshall, in which Boseman played Thurgood Marshall, on. That means he also filmed Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, 21 Bridges, Da 5 Bloods and his last movie while undergoing treatment.
“It was the honor of his career to bring King T’Challa to life in Black Panther,” the statement read. “He died in his home, with his wife and family by his side. The family thanks you for your love and prayers, and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time.”
Chadwick Boseman had not filmed ‘Black Panther 2’ yet
Even before the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Black Panther 2 would not be in production yet. Even on the original schedule, it was on the Marvel slate for 2022.
The pandemic pushed all of Marvel’s production schedules, including the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and films like Shang-Chi and hte Legend of the Ten Rings, The Eternals, Thor: Love and Thunder and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
He hoped to play a Black samurai too
Boseman was also attached to the film Yasuke. He would have starred in the true story of the only Black Samurai in the 16th Century. At the press junket for 21 Bridges, Boseman said he had already begun training in swordplay.
‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ will be Chadwick Boseman’s last movie
The family’s statement confirmed that Boseman had finished Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Netflix announced the film in June 2019 with a July start of production. Based on the August Wilson play, Viola Davis plays “Queen of Blues” Ma Rainey. In 1927 Chicago, Ma Rainey has a tumultuous recording session.
Boseman plays Levee, Ma Rainey’s trumpeter. Glynn Turman, Colman Domingo and Michael Potts fill out the band. George C. Wolfe directs Ruben Santiago-Hudson’s adaptation of Wilson’s play. Denzel Washington and Todd Black produced.
Netflix plans to release the film this year and provided the following synopsis:
