Chelsea Handler is a celebrity who isn’t afraid to say just about anything. As a comedian, this has served her well, and her fans are here for whatever she has to tell us next. Recently, she gave her opinion on vegan diets, and her thoughts were just as outrageous as you might expect.

Lots of celebrities are turning to a plant-based diet these days, but don’t expect to see Handler jump on that bandwagon. She has a strong opinion about what being a vegan does to a person, and suffice to say that she thinks it stinks.

Chelsea Handler’s healthy choices

Handler’s sense of humor has taken her far. She has six bestselling books, multiple stand-up specials, an a late-night talk show to her name. According to Women’s Health, her busy career doesn’t stop her from making time to exercise and choose foods that help her feel her best.

She usually starts her day with a little fresh celery juice, then she follows that up with a workout. After exercise, she generally has a breakfast of scrambled egg whites with Parmesan, garlic, onion, and hot peppers. For lunch, she opts for fresh, flavorful food, such as grilled oysters with a side of steamed green vegetables.

She may snack on a salad in the afternoon, then finish her day with a dinner that features a lean protein, such as fish or turkey meatballs. At night, she loves to snack on blueberries.

Clearly, Handler puts a lot of thought and effort into healthy choices. But just how far is she willing to go to stay strong? It turns out that she has her limits.

‘I’ve smelled their farts’

In a YouTube video for WIRED, Handler responded to some of the most-searched questions about her. She settled queries such as “Can Chelsea Handler sing?” The answer is no. To the question “Who is Chelsea Handler dating?” she said that she’s not dating anyone, but after spending so much time in quarantine, she’s very ready to get out there again.

One of the questions featured in the video asked if the fit funny girl is vegan. Although this seems like a reasonable assumption, considering how many celebrities opt for the vegan lifestyle, Handler shut down that idea emphatically.

“No,” she replied. “I think vegan people fart. A lot. And I have been around them, and I’ve smelled their farts, and I’m not interested in being vegan because of that.”

Intestinal gas is an interesting reason to reject an eating plan, but is Handler right? It seems that there is something to her claim.

According to Yum Vegan Food, people who transition to a plant-based diet often do experience an increase in gas. This is generally because vegan diets have a lot of vegetables, grains, and legumes, all of which are high in fiber. When people replace low-fiber animal foods with these high-fiber options, it can take a little time for their digestive systems to adjust. The result? Lots of farting.

The good news is that the body will adapt to a high-fiber diet after a while. Eating slowly, drinking plenty of water, and regular exercise are all strategies that help reduce excess gas during the transition. Over time, the body will adapt to the extra fiber, so gas levels should return to normal.

This is good news for Handler if she ever wants to reconsider becoming vegan. Although she would probably experience some smelly results at first, the problems would pass in time.
