Chelsea Peretti stopped appearing as a series regular in ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’

In May 2018, Fox canceled Brooklyn Nine-Nine after five seasons. NBC then stepped in and picked up the show for a sixth season, which premiered on the network in January 2019.

Before the premiere of the sixth season, Peretti let fans know she would no longer be a series regular on Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

In a Twitter thread, Peretti wrote,

“B99 fans. Hiiiiiiiiiiii. Chelsea Peretti, here. I won’t be doing a full season of Brooklyn Nine Nine in Season 6. But that doesn’t mean I won’t ever be back, winky face emoji, heart emoji. I want to thank you for the hours you spent watching Gina be Gina:

confident, idiotic-but-smart, pithy, and infused with rhythm and cell-phone radiation. It is hard for me to know exactly what to say. Perhaps Emmy Rossum said it best when she wrote about Shameless (I bolded the extra relevant parts in her quote below):”

Peretti then tweeted the announcement Rossum posted when she decided to leave Shameless in 2018.

Why she left the show

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Peretti explained why she left the show after Season 6 of Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

“Well, it wasn’t just a solo process,” Peretti told the publication. “I wasn’t just like, ‘I’m leaving!’ and I swing my cape. I can’t get into the exact breakdown of how it all transpired, but it wasn’t just my solo decision. I’m friends with Dan, I’m friends with Andy [Samberg], I’ve talked with them about the situation over the years. I think it came together this was the time to do it. It’s not always easy to make changes in life, but I feel like everyone came to a point where everyone was like, ‘OK, this is the time.’ That’s the gist of it.”

The character could return in season 8 of ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’

At the end of April, Goor told fans that writers started working on Season 8 of Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

“I’m happy to announce that the #Brooklyn99 season 8 writers room started (remotely) today. The fact that the show has endured for this long is a testament to our amazing actors, crew, and writers, and to our fans, who are the best in the world. Thank you! Stay safe! Nine-Nine!” He tweeted.

While Gina did not appear in the most recent season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Peretti replied, “hit me w a zoom link if u wanna discuss my arc.”

Stephanie Beatriz, who plays Rosa Diaz on the show, replied to Peretti, “Already on it.”

Beatriz and Peretti were not the only cast members to have ideas for Season 8 of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Marc Evan Jackson, who plays Kevin Cozner, also gave Goor an idea for the new season.

“Kevin Kevin Kevin Kevin Kevin Kevin Kevin Kevin Kevin Kevin Kevin Kevin Kevin Kevin Kevin Kevin Kevin Kevin Kevin Kevin Kevin Kevin Kevin Kevin Kevin Kevin Kevin Kevin Kevin Kevin Kevin Kevin Kevin and Holt should renew their vows as discussed in S2E17 Boyle-Linetti Wedding,” the actor tweeted.
