Chicago Med followed up on Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) and Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto). Their lies have finally caught up to them, and there’s not much they can do about it. Here’s what happened last time on Chicago Med.

[Spoiler alert: this article contains spoilers for the Chicago Med Season 6 finale.]

Once Natalie learned her mother was going into heart failure, she vowed to do whatever she could to save her mother’s life. For her, that even meant stealing. Will was involved in a drug trial and he had to send a box of a former trial participant’s drugs back to the pharmaceutical company. Natalie saw the box of pills and swiped them before they could be picked up by the postal service.

Will eventually discovers Natalie is hiding something. He corners her and tells her to fess up. That’s when she breaks down and reveals what she did. He’s angry at first but then agrees to help her. Once Will gets involved things start to go downhill quickly.

Natalie’s mother gets a new heart

Chicago Med Season 6 Episode 16 (titled “I Will Come to Save You”), opens with Natalie sleeping by her mother’s hospital bed. Suddenly, Dr. Crockett Marcel (Dominic Rains) comes into the room and lets Natalie know that a donor heart was found for her mom. Unfortunately, there are some issues with the heart. There’s a tumor in one of the ventricles (it’s benign). In addition, the heart is being kept viable through an experimental procedure called warm perfusion.

Under normal circumstances, since the heart is being transported from Los Angeles to Chicago, by the time it gets to the hospital, it will be outside the window of viability. The warm perfusion will hopefully keep the heart viable, but there are no guarantees. Since Natalie’s mom has a rare blood type (type AB), and this heart is a match, she agrees to allow her mom to move forward with the transplant. The transplant goes well.

Natalie apologies to Crockett for not being honest about stealing the trial drugs. He says he wishes she would have trusted him in the beginning. Crockett also tells her he appreciates her no matter what happens with their relationship.

“I want you to know, regardless of everything, I’ll always be grateful to you,” says Crockett. When Natalie asks him why, he tells her his life was empty until he met her. He also says he was closed off and had a lot of fears. “You showed me what could be, how to take a chance,” he continues.

Will and Natalie are in hot water

Dr. Virani (Tehmina Sunny) tells Sharon that Will gave trial drugs to Natalie’s mother. Sharon calls Will into her office and fires him. Will tries to explain himself but Sharon isn’t having it. She won’t let him say another word, so he leaves her office.

At the end of the episode, Natalie stops Sharon in the parking lot and asks her to reinstate Will. She then confesses she was the one who stole the drugs.  Although it wasn’t shown on screen, it’s likely Sharon fired Natalie. We’ll just have to wait until next season to see how it all plays out.
