LaRoyce Hawkins plays Kevin Atwater in ‘Chicago P.D.’

Hawkins appeared as Kevin Atwater in the very first episode of Chicago P.D. Not only is Atwater an original Chicago P.D. character, but he has also appeared in episodes of Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, and Chicago Justice. Hawkins is also known for playing Michael “Shaw” Owens in the TV series South Side and for his role in films such as Hands Up, according to IMDb.

Atwater is a skilled police officer who often goes undercover to get the job done. He is partnered with Kim Burgess and the pair have a friendship that fans love. In Chicago P.D. Season 9, Atwater has been dealing with the complicated aspects of being a Black police officer. Atwater has made a lot of sacrifices for his career, and it’s high time he got a promotion.

Hawkins wants Atwater to become a detective in ‘Chicago P.D.’ Season 9

Like his partner Kim Burgess, Atwater has not moved up in rank during the whole run of the show. In an interview with CinemaBlend, Hawkins was asked if he thinks it’s time for Atwater to become a detective. The actor had a definitive answer.

“Honestly, yes. To answer the question simply, yes,” he told the outlet. “And I’m gonna tell you why. It’s because without something, without a position or an opportunity like that, Atwater will feel like there would be nothing to hold on to that would add value to why he would even continue his relationship with law enforcement.”

“Based off what he’s been through and based off what he’s seen, without the opportunity to really help more people in a specific way, he’d probably rather take his energies elsewhere, probably start buying some real estate, you know?” Hawkins continued. In Chicago P.D. Season 9, Atwater purchased a building in Burnside in the hopes of improving the community.

“If he can’t protect and serve at a high level in one direction, naturally he would try to do his best to elevate in another,” Hawkins continued to CinemaBlend. “So that’s the best way I think I can describe Atwater’s relationship right now with the blue side of himself.”

Fans are ready for Atwater to get a promotion too

By Chicago P.D. Season 9, fans are ready for Atwater and some of his fellow officers to become detectives. “Why are Atwater, Ruzek, and Burgess still officers?” a fan asked on Reddit. “Being on the show for so long and they didn’t get their promotion (yet) bothers me a lot. I think they deserve to be recognized as detectives.”

“Kev has, I remember once he spoke to the ME and asked her for help in identifying wounds on a victim for his detective exam, shame that was completely abandoned,” another fan commented. Hopefully in Chicago P.D. Season 9, this storyline will be addressed and Atwater will finally move up in rank.
