Having a father whose most famous role happens to be a superhero in the Marvel Universe sounds impressive, but Chris Hemsworth’s kids aren’t so easily won over. He may be Thor on the big screen, but at home he gets just as many eye-rolls as every other ordinary dad.

Hemsworth’s kids keep him grounded

In the June 2020 issue of GQ Australia, Hemsworth shared how, even though he’s in impressive blockbuster movies, his three kids aren’t impressed. At the very least it keeps him grounded.

Hemsworth and wife Elsa Pataky have a seven-year-old daughter and five-year-old twin boys so they are old enough to watch their dad as Thor, which Hemsworth says he gets “a kick out of,” but they certainly don’t find him any cooler for playing a superhero.

“I get a kick out of it when they actually enjoy my movies,” Hemsworth explained in the interview. “But there’s also an equal share of eye-rolls — I couldn’t be less cool in their eyes. It’s nature’s way of telling me the truth. You can fall into a false sense of self-importance on a film set, where you feel you’re special, so it’s good to remind yourself that it’s not the case. And kids certainly drive that home.”

Hemsworth says he’s been searching for balance

Since Hemsworth has had a string of success as an actor, he finds himself away from home frequently, but he’s intent on finding the balance of work and home.

“I’ve spent probably 15 years in what felt like a marathon, a constant workload,” Hemsworth noted. “So much of my energy has been geared towards that, and then having kids at the same time, I’ve been constantly trying to find the balance.”

He shared how, during the current coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, he’s following social distancing guidelines and staying at home. “I’ve really yearned for more stillness and felt a definite need to slow down. Not having a schedule in front of me has made me reposition my values and what’s important, and I think most people are having those kinds of thoughts right now.”

He’s determined to be there for his family

As an actor who has continued to book a steady stream of projects, Hemsworth has had to pump the brakes a bit after grinding for so long. “You need to have an obsessive approach,” he said of a career as an actor. adding, “just like anything where the odds are stacked against you and it’s a one-in-a-million chance that you’re going to get your foot in the door. But once you are on that train, not a day goes by where you don’t think it’s going to be taken away, all of a sudden.”

With a family now, he wants to be smart about his movie choices and not miss out on his kids growing up by constantly being on a set. “Every job I’d take, every time I’d go off on these extended trips, it got harder and harder,” he shared.

Hemsworth continued, “For a little while you don’t think the kids notice and then you realize they do. I absolutely want to continue to make films that I’m proud of, but that can also wait. Now what’s more important is my kids are at an age I don’t want to miss. And I’d hate to look back in 20 years and go, ‘Right, let’s get to work as a parent’ and I’ve missed it all.”
