Chrissy Teigen learned to cook to save money on dates

Though Teigen is known for her cooking blog and is now a two-time cookbook author with her book Cravings: Recipes for All the Food You Want to Eat and her follow-up book, she did not start off having much knowledge in the kitchen.

She learned to cook in the early months of dating her now-husband, John Legend because, at the time, she was not making enough to take him on impressive dates like he was doing for her.

“On one of our earliest dates, I took him to Daniel (four dollar signs on Yelp, ahhh!). I drank a $40 margarita, ate salmon rillettes (fancy salmon spread), and prayed my card wouldn’t be declined,” she told Glamour. “I couldn’t afford to take him out to more dinners like that, so I started cooking more and more at home for us. I started with my own version of that salmon spread, then roasted whole branzino, osso buco, chipotle BBQ chicken.”

Chrissy Teigen’s spiced honey chicken wings ingredients

One of Teigen’s most iconic Super Bowl recipes is her spiced honey chicken wings. On her Cravings By Chrissy Teigen website she writes,

If you’ve never tried Chinese five-spice powder, now’s your chance! It’s warm, it’s cinnamony, and contains star anise, possibly nature’s prettiest spice, that looks like a star and tastes a bit like licorice. We added some hot Chinese mustard and a bit of fish sauce (because we basically have a faucet of the stuff at our place), and add honey for that lazy, glazey effect. Bonus: These are baked, not fried! Save your cooking oil for another occasion…

  • 2 pounds chicken wings or drumettes, patted dry
  • 2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1½ teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
  • ¼ cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons Chinese mustard (Dijon or prepared Colman’s mustard are fine, too!)
  • 1 tablespoon orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • ½ teaspoon fish sauce

Chrissy Teigen’s spiced honey chicken wings instructions

Aside from the five-spice powder, Teigen’s honey spiced chicken wings are pretty straight forward, To begin, preheat your oven to 375 degrees.

After washing and prepping the wings toss them with salt and pepper in a large bowl. Next, arrange them on a rack set on a rimmed baking sheet. Bake the wings for 50 to 60 minutes or until they are dark and crunchy.

In the last 10 minutes of baking, combine the honey, mustard, orange juice, five-spice powder, vinegar, and fish sauce in a small pot. Bring the ingredients to a boil. Then, reduce the heat to medium-low, whisking until thickened. This should only take a couple of minutes.

Pour the sauce into a large bowl and cover it with foil to keep it warm. When the wings are done, dump them in the sauce tossing them completely, and serve them warm.
