The year was 2005, and Christina Milian and Nick Cannon had just ended their relationship, which began after they starred in 2003’s Love Don’t Cost a Thing together.

The singer would go on to release a barrage of breakup anthems, such as 2006’s “Gonna Tell Everybody,” where she sings about moving on from an unfaithful lover whom many believed to be Cannon. But she never directly commented on their relationship drama — until now.

In a new interview, the Falling Inn Love actress confirmed that Cannon had cheated on her, which lead to the end of their relationship. Here’s how she discovered the Wild ‘N Out star had been seeing other people.

Milian did some detective work

During the week of Sept. 8, Milian appeared on E! News’ digital series Just the Sip, where she opened up on the subject. One day, she said, she hacked into his phone and discovered a bunch of incriminating text messages.

“When I was dating Nick Cannon, the password somehow worked on the first check, and I was right and the next thing you know, I was reading for like a month. I was reading messages,” the “Say I” crooner explained.

“I was stuck in Romania [and] had time,” she continued. Milian said she wanted to bust him in person, so she started gathering information. “I’m going to get my intel, make sure this is for real for real and it was for real, so it was enough,” she added.

She waited to confront him

Milian added that she waited a month to confront Cannon because she “couldn’t deal with the idea that if we ended up breaking up, I wasn’t going to get to see him again.”

“So I wanted to be able to see him in person, go over it—not like it would change anything—but part of me was like he was my first love. It was unreal that it was happening. He was living at my house. Right under my roof, this is happening? It just kind of blew me away,” Milian continued.

But she went on to say that she eventually accepted the outcome of their relationship and that she believes Cannon has “changed his ways.”

Cannon’s response to Milian’s confession

On Sept. 13, Cannon stopped by the radio show Power 106 and seemingly responded to Milian’s comments. During the interview, he implied that he and his former co-star were never officially together and said he wanted her to catch him.

“I don’t think I did anything wrong. I wasn’t cheating, you got to be in a relationship to cheat,” Cannon said (via E! News). “We not going to get into the details but I would say the way I believe if, she went through my phone and all that, and back then is what I told her and I will tell her now, but if you go looking for something you [gonna] find something.”

He added, “And I’m going to tell you this, if a man, I’ll speak for myself, if I am careless enough to allow myself to get caught then that means I wanted to get caught. The word is careless, you know what careless means…I could care less. I was at an age where I didn’t care.”

When asked what his passcode was, Cannon responded, “0-0-0-0. I didn’t give a damn!”

Milian and Cannon moved on

After their split, Milian went on to date and marry music producer The Dream. And while they, too, eventually broke up, they share a beautiful daughter named Violet. The singer also dated stars like Lil Wayne and Matt Pokora, with whom she’s expecting a baby boy.

Cannon, on the other hand, married Mariah Carey in 2008. They had two kids, Monroe and Moroccan, before calling it quits in 2015. About two years later, he welcomed a third child named Golden with model Brittany Bell.

So, while their relationship didn’t make it, it’s at least good to see that Milian and Cannon both went on to find love again.
