Cody Simpson and Miley Cyrus ended their relationship on good terms

On May 30, Simpson appeared on an episode of 60 Minutes Australia, where he opened up about his brief fling with Cyrus.

The two were first linked in October 2019 following her split from The Hills: New Beginnings star Kaitlynn Carter and separation from ex-husband Liam Hemsworth.

The two maintained a romance for ten months until they decided to call it quits in August 2020.

During his interview with 60 Minutes Australia, Simpson explained how his romance with Cyrus came to be, sharing that they made the seamless transition from friends to lovers.

“I’d known her for a long time at that point,” he said. “She’d kind of acted almost as like a, not as a mentor, but she was always a heightened creative person.”

The “La Da Dee” singer continued, “We went from kind of being good friends and just having a lot of the same friends to being together for a while.”

As for why he and the Disney Channel alum split, Simpson says their relationship was “just one of those phases.”

“Everything ended fairly amicably,” he shared. “It was just one of those phases I guess you go through and you learn a lot from it.”

So, it was a shock when media outlets announced their breakup.

At first, no one knew why the pair had ended things. But after their split made headlines, Cyrus told fans on Instagram Live that she and Simpson were “individually working on” themselves, which was a reason for their split.

“For right now, two halves can’t make a whole, and we’re individually just working on ourselves, becoming the people that we want to be. Like everybody else at this age, we’re just deciding who we want to be with our lives, what we want to do with our lives,” Cyrus explained at the time.

Though she and Simpson were over, the “Wrecking Ball” singer emphasized that she intended to remain friends with her ex. She even noted that there’s a good chance they will cross paths again in the future.

“Don’t make it some drama story if next week we hang out and we’re getting pizza,” Cyrus added. “We’ve been friends for 10 years, and we’re going to continue to be friends. Just don’t make it something that it is not.”
