John David and Abbie Duggar have done things a bit differently than the rest of the Duggar family from the moment they met. The two wed after a short courtship, but they redefined the rules and chose to get married later in life than most of the Duggar kids do.

Now, fans are convinced the two have continued to break Michelle and Jim Bob’s family rules.

John and Abbie Duggar made their own courtship rules

When John and Abbie started courting, they didn’t play by the same rules as the rest of the family. John had remained single for most of his twenties and chose not to marry at a young age like the majority of his siblings. When he met Abbie, he knew she was the one, but he wasn’t about to have an extremely reserved courtship.

Though John and Abbie chose not to share their first kiss until the wedding, they decided to forego having a chaperone on every date. Both sets of parents allowed this, since the two were older and arguably more mature. The two relaxed the rules on physical affection as well; they were reportedly allowed to hold hands and give full hugs prior to their wedding day.

Abbie has held a job and worn pants, despite the Duggars’ beliefs

Abbie is a bit more rebellious than some of the other Duggar women. Though she comes from an extremely religious family, she didn’t rush down the aisle with the first person who shared her same values. Instead, she waited for the right person and didn’t wed until she was 26.

Abbie also wore pants, despite that most Duggar women stick to skirts and knee-length dresses for modesty. And surprisingly, Abbie is a registered nurse; holding a job is something most Duggar woman will never know, as it is believed that the woman should be the one to care for the home and children.

John and Abbie recently pierced their daughter’s ears

On Independence Day, John and Abbie posted a photo of their daughter, and eagle-eyed fans noticed she’d had her ears pierced. “Congrats on her getting [her] ears pierced!!!” one user wrote. And some who follow the show, though they mostly criticize, took to Reddit to discuss John and Abbie piercing their daughter’s ears at such a young age.

“Is Grace the first [grand-Duggar] to have her ears pierced as a baby?” one user questioned. “I am actually surprised they did this,” another user wrote. Others pointed out that Josh and Anna Duggar’s daughters also had their ears pierced young, suggesting that it was up to the headship to decide.

It’s unclear how many kids John and Abbie will have

John and Abbie have already proved they’re different from the rest of the Duggars, and it’s possible they’ll have fewer kids than the rest of the family as well. Abbie was 27 when Grace was born, so she already started having children later in life than the other Duggar women.

It’s unclear when or if Abbie and John will announce another pregnancy, but since John is one of 19 kids and Abbie is one of eight, it’s likely they’ll still have a large family.
