Fans of the Scream film franchise were thrilled to learn they’re getting a sixth installment. Not only that, but Courteney Cox will also reprise her role as news reporter Gale Weathers. The actor recently confirmed her involvement in the upcoming movie, which she says has a killer script.

Paramount and Spyglass recently announced that another Scream movie is in the works, and Cox quickly revealed she would be involved.

“I don’t know about contracts and where things are, but I’ll tell you in the script — it’s a really good one,” the actor said in an episode of the Just for Variety podcast. “You actually have to be killed if you talk about it, so I’m not gonna say anything.”

Cox has been in all the Scream movies, as has another star, who met his end in the last installment.

David Arquette, who played Cox’s on-screen ex, died in Scream 5. Cox and Arquette were also an item off-screen. The two were married from 1999 to 2013 and share a daughter, Coco.

“It was sad because Dewey is such a beloved character, and he’s so goofy,” Cox said of Arquette’s character’s death. “I thought he brought such a comedic twist to the whole franchise. I think that was a downer.”

What we know about ‘Scream 6’

Plot details for the new Scream are slim right now. But The Hollywood Reporter released a short teaser saying, “The Scream saga continues with the four survivors of the Ghostface killings as they leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter.”

The sixth Scream is set to come out in March 2023, a little over a year after the fifth hit theaters.

“We are tremendously grateful to the fans around the world who enthusiastically received our film,” the franchise’s two production companies — Paramount and Spyglass — said in a statement announcing Scream 6. “We can’t wait for audiences to see what Radio Silence, writers Jamie [Vanderbilt] & Guy [Busick], and Project X have in store for our Woodsboro family.”

Courteney Cox isn’t the only returning star that has fans excited. Hayden Panettiere will also come back to the horror franchise, reprising her role of Kirby Reed from 2011’s Scream 4

Fans were excited about this news for one major reason: Many assumed Kirby had died after the killer stabbed her. However, a small clue in Scream 5 gave fans a hint about Kirby’s fate.

During a scene where a character is watching a YouTube video about Ghostface, eagle-eyed fans spotted another video link on the side of the screen that read, “Interview with Woodsboro survivor Kirby Reed,” with Panettiere’s photo attached.

The actor’s return to the horror franchise is also a big deal for another reason. Panettiere has not been on screen since 2018, when her TV drama Nashville ended.

In addition to Cox and Panettiere, the cast will also include Melissa Barrera (as Sam), Jasmin Savoy Brown (Mindy), Mason Gooding (Chad), and Jenna Ortega (Tara). All four actors made their Scream debuts in the fifth installment, released this past January.

Fans of the horror franchise are happy that the Scream movies have finally returned to the big screen and are overjoyed that stars such as Cox and Panettiere are reprising their iconic roles.
